Short information on how to get started writing you own life story. Preserve your heritage for future generations.
The easiest way to begin is to “just start writing”. Jot down the absolute first things you remember.
Then begin a year by year outline using one sheet of paper per year.Add things as they come to your mind in the appropriate year. Describe your situation, home life, parents and grandparents. Insert all the funny little stories and happenings.
Then start with your grade school years, explain anything that occurred, your favorite teachers, etc. Describe them year by year, noting friends, and things you enjoyed and excelled in.
Then move on to high school. Outline your dating , growing up ,and teen years. Add notes, trials, problems you faced, friends, dates, and accomplishments.
Explain your graduation year, goals, your college years. Add as many details as you can remember.
Then begin with your marriage/marriages and home life, children ,careers, jobs, etc.
A good thing to use to help jog your memory is your yearly social security statement. In the United States, it gives a complete outline of your working years. Each year or job will bring up lots of memories. And you will be able to determine any gaps that have to be filled in. If you don’t have a yearly statement, you should be able to use a family members statement as a guideline. It will at least jog your memory a little, as you may be able to recall what you were doing when so and so worked at such and such a place.
Be very careful of writing anything defamatory about anyone , or anything that could have a negative effect on your published work.
Continue to write every day and add things as they are recalled. Turn it into a daily journal.
If writing presents a problem for you, use a tape recorder and hire someone to type it all up for you.
There are also computer speech programs that will type out what you say and all you have to do is go back and make all the corrections and organize your work.
You will know when the time is right to publish it. There are several sources on the internet that offer”publish on demand”, at no charge. You simply have to purchase your own copies at very nominal prices. Create the book, order a copy and edit extensively before adding an ISBN number and making it available to the public.

I have no plans to write my autobiography but this sure seems like a good way to approach it. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying that,”There’s at least one good novel in everybody.” I guess the same goes for autobiographies.
I grew up during the youth counter culture in the 60s. I fought in Vietnam. I was a frontman for several local rock and roll bands and I went back to school and got my MFA in fiction writing from the University of Pittsburgh in 2006 when I was 59 years old. So, I have something to write about.
