How Many Hours Do You Spend Writing Per Day?

I came across this discussion topic at a forum. I asked myself the same question and found it a difficult one to answer. I can’t pinpoint exactly how much time I spend writing on a particular day. It all depends.

1) Roles and Responsibilities
It all depends on the roles and responsibilities one has. For example, I’m a mother. I have a household to maintain. I cook, clean and look after my daughter. Most of the time, my daughter dictates the amount of time I have for writing. There were some mornings when she’d rather play on her own or with our next door neighbour, leaving me with some peaceful moments to write. Other than that, I would have to wait until she is taking her nap in the afternoon or asleep at night to indulge in my writing activities.

2) Inspired Moments
That goes without saying. Writers have their inspirational moments when words just flow faster than they can type them. At other times, they are faced with the annoying blank page in front of them for hours. Although writer’s block can get in the way of my writing, I try not to allow it at all. When I have the chance to write, I try to write anything and everything to start things off and amend later if they are not suitable. To me, writing moments must be made into inspiring moments, or I will never get to write.

3) Writing on the Go!
I don’t have a specific schedule as to my writing hours. When I have to head down to the office, I often use the hour on the public transport to type my articles on my cellphone. Subsequently, I’d transfer them all to the computer before publishing them online. As you can see, my writing hours can be quite staggered. A few moments here and a few moments there is all I can get in a day.

4) Writing Goal
I do have a writing goal. I must write at least one article per day, unless I’m sick. Since it does not take much time to produce one article, usually 20-30 minutes, I guess that is the minimum amount of time I spend on writing per day. But I do try to write as many as possible, especially when I feel motivated and inspired to write. I relish these moments because I could write and write, as long as I’m not interrupted.

5) Researching and Other Pre-Writing Activities
A writer writes. But in preparation for writing, a writer often has to do a little research or planning and organising before he starts typing. If this is considered as part of writing, then it would mean longer time spent on writing in a day. Surfing for materials can take up a considerable amount of time, but they are essential to the writing itself.

I think you can understand my dilemma in answering the above question. I’m sure some of you feel the same. The number of hours we spend on writing in a single day really depends on so many factors that it becomes almost impossible to calculate exactly how much time is dedicated to writing. But the main thing is to find the time to write, even if it is just a few minutes in a day.
