Improve your writing

How Hard is Writing?

How hard is writing? Don’t let anyone scare you away from writing by telling you how hard it is. The truth is writing is a joy for most writers. Research can be time consuming and tedious but getting your ducks all in a row on the computer or paper can be a happy experience. Writing is solitary. It’s a one man, or one woman business. Visitors or any interruptions are discouraged during writing sessions. Get on your writing hat and take a shot at it. You might be surprised at how much fun writing can be.

                           Is Writing Hard?

How hard is writing for you? For many writing is hard, for others it’s a joy. Don’t let anybody discourage you by telling you how hard writing is.  Understand that writing can be an enjoyable occupation. Many people think if writing comes easily, it couldn’t possibly be any good.  Well, the truth is, we all do have days when the words don’t want to come and the research stalls. But writing can still be a joy, otherwise why do we do it? Certainly not for the money we make on Triond, Bukisa or other publishing sites.

We do it because words and ideas are bubbling up to be captured.  We have our own opinions on issues, on an interesting time in history, or maybe a poem or recipe to share. It really doesn’t matter what it is. The point is sharing our thoughts and opinions on what is important to us or what touches our heart.
To be a writer, I think we first of all have to love writing and not be afraid of sharing our opinions. We have to love seeing the words piling up on paper or running across our computer screen. It has to give us joy to see another article show up on our content page. our articles means very little in the whole scheme of things, but it’s a small act of faith to type down our words and send out the finished article for the world to see. (if it so chooses)
I sit at my computer with the door closed, pens, paper, dictionary, thesaurus, notebooks and all manner of stuff piled up around my computer. I mumble and talk to myself as I search for information and type words onto the screen. I am in a world of my own and the last thing I want when I’m writing is to be interrupted, so don’t come knocking on my door or you will get short shift. Writing is a solitary business.
No matter how busy we are though, we must find time to read. We need to see how other writers express themselves, how they get their information across in an orderly manner. No matter what our education is, reading is the most important thing a writer can do for himself. We should read everyday, the newspaper, magazines, stories, fiction, non-fiction. It keeps new ideas flowing in and keeps the brain humming.

    Ruby,
Excellent article. I do most of my writing after my wife goes to bed. If I write during the day, she interrupts me at least three times an hour. Everything trivial becomes a major reason for her to interrupt me. So I write for a few hours before going to bed. Again, Excellent article.

I enjoy writing but it is so difficult to have time to yourself. My hubby loves to interrupt. I sometimes think he does it on purpose to see how riled he can get me, lol. A enjoyable piece.

I love writing, it’s hard to find a topic sometimes and it can be creul to see a piece that you put so much effort into get less views and exposure than you expected. However, it’s fun to write and as you said it, I love to see the words pile up on the page.

    Nice post.

this is a great share :) I do love writing too though there are times when I’m hit by a writer’s block that no words seem to be good enough to express an idea..but despite it all, writing continues to be my passion and my joy ^_^ I really enjoyed reading this.

I agree with your article Ruby. Writing is a joy. Sometimes I may not do so well. And someone might always have a opinion about it. But they too must look in the mirror. What might be interesting to one, might not be so interesting to another. That’s why their are so many different flavors of writing like Jenny Heart wrote. We write what we feel, and yes it is good advice to also do some reading. Thank you for this.

Ruby, I really would like to disagree with you. The only easy writing I know of is what Triond publishes, they have really pushed standards downhill and that is why it has attracted every Tom Dick and Harry making it appear easy.

Great article, Ruby. So why is it so easy to write comments on other people’s articles, and natter away in a chat room or email, but when I sit down to write my own articles, it can be like squeezing the words one at a time out of my brain?

LOL! Sometimes writing comes bubbling out of my brain – those are the articles that usually do well.

    Dear Ruby Hawk
Your article “How Hard is Writing?” is remarkable. “Solitary” is the right word for a writer. You aptly say:
“I am in a world of my own and the last thing I want when I’m writing is to be interrupted, so don’t come knocking on my door or you will get short shift. Writing is a solitary business”. Moreover, the work of writing is morally and spiritually elevating. I am feeling quite enlightened by your extraordinary views about writing as a profession. I shall read your other articles also. By reading each other’s articles and providng a few comments will benefit both of us, and it may add to our earnings. Kindly spare some time to read my articles on prestigious Triond

I can relate to everything you said with a little modification. Much as I want to write in the privacy of my room, I just don’t have that luxury. I’m a full time father and husband and I also have a full time job. I write in the midst of the chaos of our home hoping that what will come out is still sharable. I hope someday things will change and I can have more privacy when I write. Tnx for the post, I’ve been encouraged.

Very nice article! I have begun to read much more than I used to. I have been reading mainly non-fiction, since the articles I tend to write are non-fiction, though I have done a couple conspiracy theories for fun. Writing can be an extremely entertaining experience to do, if you have the time to do it, that is. I tend to write differently than you, solitary confinement actually hurts me more than it helps me, because I usually read out what I am writing to others around me to see if they like how it is coming along, granted I have been slacking on that quite a bit lately. Anyway, nice article, and congratulations on making the hot content list.

i love to write but the mere idea of jotting down idea bores me .. may be since i spend some good time as a mule at a writing firm … i lost the passion for it … I usually have idea dropping like bombs , if i could only find a free ghost writer ;)

Ha ha ha.. Suhail seems I have a similar kind of problem like you have. Even i have a lot of things running around my head. I don’t understand from where exactly should I start. Sometimes its too simple to the readers and other times its very difficult. I want to write in such a manner where everyone can understand, no barriers.

Excellent article. Writing in itself is not hard. Writing is a talent. The hard part is having time to write. That is my problem. I agree when I write I go into my own world and I don’t want anyone to talk to me. My daughter will drive me crazy by calling and I tell her I am writing and she will say good your not busy. To understand writers you have to be one.

Really like the advice on reading. I recently decided to try something – I went to the bookstore and bought a random lot of bargain books. I’m in the middle of my stack and I’ve enjoyed all the ones I’ve read so far. It really was an experiment to see if I could step outside of my comfort zone, but when the words won’t come for my short stories, I pick up a book and continue.

    It’s like greasing the wheels.

    Thanks for the article! :-D

I love this article. I wish people (non-writers) understood the importance of leaving you alone when you write.. Most think because I’m sitting in my home that I’m not busy. But I make my living from writing so I have made some people mad at me occasionally, “no, I’m busy now, can’t go shopping, no, you cannot use my computer to check your email.” It seems that if you work from home and usually make more money than others you don’t have a “Real Job.”

    July 20th, 2010 at 8:50 pm

It was a pretty good article. I think it depends on the topic. If it’s something I can relate to or something I have read, it’s easy to do. Say an English Book Report on “To Kill A Mockingbird.” Once you read it, it’s easy to write about it since you can relate to it. But if you’ve never done politics in your life, and you have to write about Bush’s presidency, it might be a tad bit difficult to do this. Thanks for reading :D

    Thanks for the motivation, Ruby.

I agree with f3ar3dlegend that it depends on the topic. If it is something I like or have read or done, then the words would flow and the article would be done in no time.

Otherwise, I would be struggling to find the right words and information.
