I have been writing fiction on and off for a number of years but have never managed to complete a piece, or when I have, it has been edited that much that the final piece has nothing of the original idea in there.
I have been studying for an Open University degree for five years and decided after my third year to try something different, so I enrolled on the level two Creative Writing course (A215) and decided to try my hand at fiction properly. By the end of the course my portfolio had increased tenfold. I have three short fiction pieces, a number of poems and four pieces of life writing. I also have a number of pieces that need completing but have very good starts and ideas to work with from the course.
When I got my final result I decided to move on to the Advanced Creative Writing Course (A363) which gave me the opportunity to try my hand at script writing for screen, radio and also stage. This course has added a lot more pieces to my portfolio and have also had a number of pieces accepted to be published in First Edition Magazine, one of which has already been published, I can’t wait to see the rest in print!
I would highly recommend to anyone thinking about taking a course, the Open University but any course will give you the structure and support you need to create, draft, edit and complete a number of pieces to your full potential. Give it a shot, you never know what you might achieve.

I too have completed a distance learning course although not with the OU, but I would recommend it to anyone as you can learn at your own pace.

Much agreed, I would love at some point to go and do a writers retreat as well at some point!
