Improve your writing

Hobbies, Pastimes or Aims

What is it you are striving to achieve for?

Whenever I tell someone that I love writing, I soon hear “Oh, this is an interesting hobby!” I frown saying that it isn’t a hobby for me, but an aim. Writing, as all creative leanings and as well as studying, is a lonely activity to be regarded as a hobby.

My sister told me once that she didn’t have hobbies, but aims that she was interested in and she expected to get good results out of the work she put on them.

For me, a hobby is an activity that we take on to pass the time and not get bored while we await for the next day to go back to work.

It may be strolling around or the star and number one in our everyday living. Yeah, you’ve guessed it! It’s watching TV everyday for an amount of hours, whether one likes what one is watching or not. But spending some time in front of the box seems to be a very popular pastime. People will moan about the s… they’ve watched, but they still watch it day in and ay out. This is in my opinion a real pastime.

Yet, I am not one to want to pass the time. I don’t want to count my days, but I do want them to count.

If I didn’t have this aim of writing to allow me earn a living, if only on a modest level ,  I don’t think I’d spend a a long time on it. It is way too lonely an activity to stay on it long. One walks in the writing room to switch on the computer to write.

If one is taking writing seriously, it requires drafting, researching, editing, finding good material to go with one’s work to finally submitting to the intending publishing market. Therefore, this is work and too hard one to be regarded as a mere pastime. Not in vain, writers main ailments are… you’ve guessed it again  as they are back ache and wrist cramps. If after all, one loves it, one may go on writing but expecting to achieve something worthwhile. Or going to it whenever it takes one’s fancy, which in this case it would a hobby or a pastime.

I do admit that out of a hobby, one may turn it into one’s big aim. It will do too. I once met a guy while in London who joined in some evening classes on graphic design to unwind from his dull job in a hotel. He was lucky enough to meet an inspirational teacher and this hobby of his became his aim to end up applying for a grant to study full time at the prestigious Royal School of Graphic Design that provided him with a degree on the course he had started as a hobby.

This girl is an engineering graduate who aims to excel in the field of SEO.

As I say, a hobby or a pastime will only become one’s big aim, provided one focus on it seriously, works on it, meets other people related to the topic and works hard enough to achieve something  other than filling few gaps in one’s spare time until it is time to diner or going to bed till the next day.
