Headlines Guaranteed to Grab The Reader

I’ve been a freelance writer for 12 years and have had short stories and poems published since the 1970’s so I have some proven tips for amateur writers. Headlines grab the reader is the first one.

Think about it.  When you lift the daily newspapers, which articles do you read first?  The ones with the catchiest headlines, the headlines that carry the juiciest scandal, the ones that offer you something you want, and those about celebrity gossip.   Those which grab the attention most carry buzz words, dramatic words, and words which inspire confidence in what’s on offer.

Go do a survey of the catchiest headlines in all the newspapers over the past week, make notes on what it is that drew you to them.  Newspapers like the Sun make money because of dramatic headlines.

What about “Gay Vicar, 74, to marry Teenage Rent Boy,”  “Lough Ness Monster Found Shot Dead Today,” “Lawyer Accidentally Sues Himself,”  and “Mad Dog on Rampage Eats Panties!”  Would these attract your attention enough to read them?  These are good strategies for press reporting and article writing.

Writing experts advise you to start factual article writing with headlines like:

Who Else Wants…

The Secret of…

Proven Method to Help…

Little Known Ways To…

What You Really Need To Know About.

I’m not so sure these are still in vogue, but they are worth trying if you are writing on Triond.
