Get your mojo workin’.
Writing is long and life is short. That’s one way to look at the craft of the writer. When people ask me why I still write after all these years, depending on my mood, I might say something like I can’t stop writing. In another mood I might say something like, writing is the only way I can get an erection. Guess which answer people think is probably true?

Without inspiration a writer is as good as an empty keg of beer at a frat party. If a writer writes only when inspiration strikes that writer won’t write much. That’s because if a writer writes long enough a bad idea may turn into another, better idea. Do you see where this article is going?
Online writing is tough. Especially online writing for money. But a writer won’t have much online success if the writer doesn’t keep writing.
It’s a good feeling to feel creative. It’s a good feeling to produce content that someone else wants to read. Making a long term commitment to writing has benefits. Making money from writing is just one of the benefits.
Money is mentioned a lot in this article. I think about money a lot. But if money had been my reason for writing I would have given up being a writer years ago. So I guess I don’t write for money, but I sure like it when my writing makes money.
Do what you have to do to keep writing.

November 10th, 2009 at 7:08 am
You sparked another idea in my mind but got to leave for work. Always a nice read my friend. Don’t stop inspiring others.
November 10th, 2009 at 7:15 am
Well-said.
November 10th, 2009 at 7:41 am
I agree sure ain’t the money pal!
November 10th, 2009 at 7:48 am
As you say, money is only one of the benefits. No true writer writes for money alone.
November 10th, 2009 at 7:49 am
Thank you for the lift!
November 10th, 2009 at 7:58 am
Great one!
November 10th, 2009 at 8:18 am
I completely agree with you, thanks for sharing.
November 10th, 2009 at 8:24 am
I’m with you on this one Guy. I’ve always dreamed of being a writer – since I was about five years old. I always excelled at English when I was at school but the real world somehow took over my life and the dream just sort of fell by the wayside.
5 years ago I started working from home as a digital typist in the real estate/property law sector but when the recession came along and some of the work tailed off I decided to take up my ‘dream’ once again. I found Triond and thought I might be able to make a living at it … but no go! But my writing has now become an addiction and although I can do with the dosh, I’m doing it more out of love than for money. However, as time has progressed I’m finding it easier to whip up a quick article from subjects that fascinate me and I’m now reaping some rewards – I’m not making enough money to live on but enough to buy me a takeaway once a month!
So, who knows, I might eventually make enough to live on but, for now, I’ll settle for the cost of a pizza
November 10th, 2009 at 8:41 am
That is encouraging. Thanks!
November 10th, 2009 at 9:03 am
nice little motivator – thanks!
November 10th, 2009 at 9:36 am
I don’t think I will ever make any money at writing but I just enjoy it, like I did this article.

November 10th, 2009 at 9:45 am
thanks for the inspiration to give that boost to those that need it.
November 10th, 2009 at 10:02 am
You’re absolutely right on the mark. Writing opens up inspiration; writing is therapeutic; writing is expressive. Writing helps me to see other things better when I’m not writing.
November 10th, 2009 at 10:08 am
I think writing is in a person just like art and music, but without development and the old saying 90%-10% we’d be mediocre or wouldn’t do anything at all. It has to be a driving force, you have to really need to have the desire. Writing can be a wonderful profession once you find that key to unlock the door. Another really good and inspiring one from you Guy, thanks!
November 10th, 2009 at 10:15 am
This article hits the hammer right on the nail!
November 10th, 2009 at 10:32 am
Great piece! Very enjoyable
November 10th, 2009 at 10:36 am
The money is nice and it helps pay the bills, but I don’t think money is what drives most writers either. I wrote for years and no one saw my work.
November 10th, 2009 at 10:38 am
thanks for the share…
November 10th, 2009 at 11:34 am

November 10th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
You’re straight on target with this article. I guess so many writers are on a similar plateau of effectiveness that it spreads the available money out to too many hands. It’s hard to have more unique articles than others.
November 10th, 2009 at 1:44 pm
Nice
November 10th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
I love to write and you do make some money here and there. Please check out my stuff too
November 10th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
Writing keeps me sane, and in a way it helps organize my thoughts. It’s a relief when it’s already out of my head and into the computer drive, then off to publishing. The few cents it adds makes a nice touch to it.
November 10th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
Just the bit of inspiration and grounding I needed today, Thanks.
November 10th, 2009 at 3:27 pm
coffeaddict, just take the long view. I think that’s the only reasonable thing to do.
November 10th, 2009 at 3:32 pm
Sophie, being a writer can be so bleak some times; but I think if the writer takes the long view good things will happen.
November 10th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
Christine, I do like to read and I like to write just for the sake of writing. I can relate to what you’re saying. I’m also trying to figure out a way to make money from writing. That’s really exciting.

Hi Guy,
Another inspiring write. Fully agree with you that one must keep writing no matter what mood one’s in. Of course it’s much easier when one’s in the zone. Keep it up. ~Ricky

November 11th, 2009 at 6:18 am
Oh, so you don’t think I’ll get rich then? What a shame! (lol)
November 11th, 2009 at 6:54 am
Writing helps me to think.
It also helps kep my thoughts organised and on days when I have to be so many things to so many people, writing helps me be myself.

Hm, that’s keep.

Melody, writers write the same way eagles fly. And probably for the same reasons.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:18 am

Solitude, no you won’t get rich; but you will become a better writer.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:52 am
Yes. I agree. Although most of us don’t really write for money. It sure is good incentive when we earn some.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:55 am
SharifaMcFarlane, that’s one of the beautiful things about writing. Writing can help to make us better thinkers, too.

November 11th, 2009 at 10:54 am
Great article! I’ve to agree with you. Thanks!
November 11th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
Sounds perfectly reasonable but I want to know how that worked, that thing in your introductory about, well, you know –I’m just too embarrassed. But if you could figure that one out you could make some real money and you could give a cut for giving you the idea in the first place. Oh, I’m sorry and embarrassed again, I didn’t mean that maybe I had given you an idea that made that —that thing, to happen. Oh, goodness, I’d better leave now. These messages are confidential, aren’t they?
November 11th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
quite nice
November 11th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
Thanks for the inspiration
November 11th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
Thank you for this. I have been going wrong by writing only when I’m inspired. I have a good bit of quality content but the quantity is low and it takes me longer to finish writing projects that I’ve started because I wait around for the next burst of inspiration. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts.
November 11th, 2009 at 5:35 pm
I read a quote recently on a freelance writer’s blog (Felicia A. Williams, No Job for Mom, if anyone’s interested). She said something like if you can earn 1 cent writing online, then you have what it takes to make $1. If you can make $1, then you have what it takes to make $10, $100, and so on. So this is another variation on the “keep writing!” theme.
November 11th, 2009 at 6:07 pm
i iz likin itz!
November 11th, 2009 at 10:43 pm
Thanks for the inspiration – another great article!
November 11th, 2009 at 10:54 pm
I like getting comments money nice, but it shouldn’t be the only reason to write.
November 12th, 2009 at 7:19 am
There are many reasons for us to write. If we keep writing, many things happen. Changes happen in society. Good things will certainly happen.
November 12th, 2009 at 10:12 am
That is a positive way of looking at it!
November 12th, 2009 at 2:54 pm

November 12th, 2009 at 11:00 pm
it’s a therapy then… great erection…!
November 13th, 2009 at 6:26 am
This article is inspiring, there is a different fulfillment in writing specially when published, comments and money are just added bonuses. It also makes me enter to a different world away from my regular work.
November 14th, 2009 at 5:41 am
Just when I am ready to give up on on-line writing I recieve a comment on my work that inspires me and I go on to write another day. Now about the erection, I am not sure what to say.
November 15th, 2009 at 1:35 am
Thanks Guy, I’m pretty new on here, but seem to come across a lot of your writing. I’m finding it exciting that even a few people are finding my work, instead of it being stuck away in a drawer. Thanks for the inspiration.
November 16th, 2009 at 10:42 pm
Great writing. Thank you so much for sharing this
November 20th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
A good article. Writing does help to get things off one’s mind. Besides, epistola non erubecit.
