Do you have a friend or family member who loves to write? Whether as a hobby or a career, the following gift ideas would be appreciated by anyone who loves to write.
Writers love to write. Sounds funny, doesn’t it? But a lot of writers enjoy the feel of pen on paper. If you have a friend or family member who loves to write you can never go wrong in purchasing good quality pens.
If you go to an office supply store you will find great gift ideas for writers. Binders, spiral notebooks, pocket notebooks, or journals are excellent gifts. You can find some plain journal books or pretty, fancy ones. Either way they will be appreciated by a writer.
Writers usually have a computer. Printing supplies such as paper and printer cartridges are an excellent choice. We tend to go through a lot of these which can be costly. If you are environmentally conscious office supply stores also carry reams of recycled paper.
If your friend likes to be organized file folders, filing cabinets or plastic storage containers with drawers or shelves will be most helpful. If you want to go smaller, desk-top storage containers or pencil holders are ideal. Lap desks can make writing easier.
If your friend is a serious writer and wants to be published, books on writing are most helpful. There are tons of them out there. Here are a few excellent suggestions: “Bird by Bird” by Anne Lamott, “Writing Down The Bones” by Natalie Goldberg, “If You Want to Write” by Brenda Ueland, “The Writer’s Idea Book” by Jack Heffron, and “On Writing” by Stephen King. A good dictionary or Thesaurus are also good gifts.
What writers like and need the most is support. Be there when they launch their first book. Purchase their publications whether an article in a magazine, a couple of pages in an anthology, or a published book. Close friends and family members expect they will get a free copy of a writer’s publication. What they really need is sales and appreciation. How better to show your support than to buy their product?

Wonderful suggestions, I’ve just rushed out and told my husband I want a new writing journal – just in case he forgets this is what I want every year!

another good thing, well depending on the writer would be Edgar Allen Poe. I’m pretty sure everyone has heard of him, and if not they need to. He has written some of the most fantastic poetry.

A great article. I also think some ink cartridges would be very useful for the printer. I am always running out and they can be so expensive.

Wish I had seen this earlier. Okay, I will just hand it out to family members next year when they ask what I want for Christmas.
