Freelance Writer Considers Payment by View a Joke

I read an article today on a website that only hires "qualified" writers. This means people that do have a degree in the subject they write about. I wrote something on pay by view that made me frown.

The writer of the article on About.com states that if you cannot get upfront payment as a freelance writer, you should not accept the assigment.

According to her, getting paid by view is a trick and I might understand she is used to different standards in life than many writers here on Triond, but so far I did recieve payment from Triond.

I might understand that it is upsetting to get just a few cents for an article that you spent much time on, but still I felt weird that she believed it was all a trick.

She claims that all good assigments that can earn big money are made by connections.

Great! I might understand she has the right ones to be paid upfront in big cash for what she does, but I do believe that you might have to start somewhere.

Where do you make a portfolio?

I found websites that promise much money for freelance writers. You need no experience, no degree, just the will to write to subscribe to them and get the big cash. But to register you need to pay first.

They do guarantee you that if you do not make payment, they will pay you back. But I am quite sure there might be a trick to it.

You get assignments to write e-books and stuff like that, if you apply there. They even have CNN banners on their site.

But if some writers are even willing to pay to get published, seems more stupid than to publish your articles by view.

All on line writing sites are there to make money. I am well aware that the sites I write for earn first before paying me.

That some might not agree with those policies, is their full right. But calling it a joke? I felt this person was quite downgrading on fellow writers who are paid by view.

To be honest: I read this About.com website and decided that if they still need writers and pay so well as they claim, I might apply as well.

So I looked up the titles for application. Found out that most required people with a degree. I am not a doctor, or anything, but I found a subject I considered interesting and thanks to Triond  and Helium I could state that I am a published writer and did not hesitate to apply when I found a suitable title.

Call me a fool that I get just paid by view, but I do have a portfolio here and presume that my work is on line because it might be worth reading. Otherwise they might not think they can make money from it.

No, I just managed to buy myself a cup of coffee with all the work I did here, but that is just money. A good writer needs skills and skills need training.

Practise makes perfect and doing it without any uncertain investment, might not be so bad. This is how I see my on line writing. It might not pay me, but it does not cost me either.

There are no stupid writers, only learning ones.

Interesting thoughts. It was the case (quite some time ago when I was an About.com guide) that part of your About.com compensation was correlated to the number of page views your site received. I don’t know how the comp system works now, but it is still likely tied to site revenue, so it’s not so different from the Triond model.

Incidentally, since leaving About.com and moving my content to my own site, my income has increased five-fold, though my readership is smaller.

It is a shame that anyone should belittle what we do on Triond. Most of us are happy with the practice it gives us and the friendships we develop through learning together. You put your point over very well.
