Regardless of whether you are a full time freelance writer or just moonlighting you can use the following tips to turn writing into a lucrative career: 

Tip 1: Charge reasonably: 

Some freelance writers end up charging either too much or too little for their work. The trick is to charge a reasonable amount so that you can earn enough to make a living and your clients are offered a realistic price. 

When you start off as a freelance writer you should be prepared to undercharge slightly. This is so you can make yourself stand out from the crowd and begin to build up a client list. As your experience level and client list expands start charging to suit your skills.  

Tip 2: Organize yourself and your work: 

Organization is an overlooked yet very important task for freelance writers. You need to keep important papers, names/addresses and records up-to-date and in order. If you are working at a desk make sure it too is organized to stop you getting distracted.  

Freelance writers should discipline themselves so that they are able to dedicate a set number of hours on their work. This way you can put an estimate as to how much you are going to make.  

Tip 3: Pay attention to marketing: 

The most successful freelance writers are the ones who are not afraid to get out there and meet-and-greet clients. Learning to market your skills is another way of boosting your freelance writing credentials and helping to attract new clients.  

Create your own website/blog and pay to advertise in local newspapers. These are just a few ways of marketing. Additionally you could also do some cold-calling when you have time on your hands.  

Tip 4: Build relationships: 

Successful long term freelance writing will mean that you have built up a strong network of clients and contacts. Build strong relationships with clients, local businesses and even other freelance writers. 

With clients and local businesses you will find it very easy to build relationships. When you are assigned a task complete it to perfection before the deadline and for a reasonable price. This will help build your reputation. 

Building relationships with other freelance writers can also help you succeed. Often when there are too many projects to complete some freelance writers may assign them over to you. You too should offer to do the same.  

Tip 5: Professionalism: 

There are a number of professional organizations that you should be thinking about joining. Not only can these organizations offer contacts and help you network they are a great source for advice. Workshops for freelance writers are another great source for knowledge and tips for staying in step with new emerging trends. 

Do not be afraid to ask satisfied clients to leave feedback. You can use this (with their permission) to help attract other clients.
