Excuse me, are you a writer? If you encountered the above question, how would you answer? I’m a writer. I’m an online writer. Some people may not consider myself as one, but let me present to you some of the reasons why I consider myself to be a writer.
1) Online Writers
If you mainly publish your materials online, do you consider yourself as a writer? Online writers are writers too. It is just a matter of where your work gets published, isn’t it? Print writers get their articles published in the papers or magazines, but yours are accepted and published online. If you submit your work to online writing sites and get published, congratulate yourself because you are a writer!
2) Earning Money
Many writers write but never had their work published in their lifetime. When they die, people discover their works and publish them post-humously. They never earned a single cent from their work, but they were writers when they were living. Many online writers may or may not earn any money from their writing, but does that not qualify themselves as writers?
If earning some money is a consideration for one to be a writer, then I’m definitely one. I write for writing sites that pay. Some of them pay me for each article piece while others pay me for pageviews I get from my articles. Every month I get paid, always on the same day every month, like a normal salaried worker does. So, I’m a writer then.
3) Write and Express my Views
One of the main reasons why people write is to express themselves. It’s a form of art. Words are used to impress ideas, express thoughts and deliver opinions. To me, if you have these three factors in mind while you write, you are definitely a writer. For me, I also write to remind others, to inspire others and to motivate others.
4) Regularity
If you consider yourself as a writer, you must be writing on a regular basis, of some sorts. You can’t be saying that you are a writer when you write once in a blue moon. I can understand when you say that you only write when inspired, but a true writer must write even when uninspired.
That’s what I do. I write articles online on a daily basis. Depending on my productivity, I can produce between 1 and 5 articles per day on various topics of my interest.
5) Full-Time or Part-Time
Do you write on a full-time or part-time basis? How I wish that I could write on a full-time basis. But I know that it is possible to earn a living from just writing. It is possible; you just need to have a strategy to achieve your goals.
At this moment, I’m writing on a part-time basis. I’m a full-time mother (not a part-time one or a weekend mum) and also hold a position as a financial adviser. Considering the flexibility of my job, I am able to write at leisure.
I don’t believe that you need to be a full-time writer to be considered as a writer. Many people have published books and other materials on the side, apart from their full-time job. Thus, whether you are a full-time writer or a part-time one should not be a consideration for being a writer.
So, after much discussion on the factors to be considered as a writer, would you consider yourself to be one?

I am a writer. I try and write all the time but sometimes I run out of things to write about and I have to think of what to write.

I think I have to agree with you. I am a writer, too. I have been paid for my works, but I need to be more consistent.
