Although many online writing sites are a job, Examiner.com makes you go through a process to start writing for them as if they are really employing you.
I’ve seen Examiner.com as a site to write for, but sort of looked over them. They actually post jobs for their sites with employment sites such as Monster and Careerbuilder.
A friend knows about my interest in writing and text me to let me know that Examiner had a job posting and are looking for freelance writers. I went to their site, read what they were about and decided to submit a sample writing to them. The site asked you to submit a sample writing for one of their categories that may be of interest to you. If they like your writing, they would bring you on board as a local writer for that topic.
Honestly, they did not have any topic that just really grabbed my interest. Because I do use Twitter, I picked that topic. I submitted a sample writing and they accepted me to write for them about Twitter. I submitted my first article and I didn’t quite understand what they were looking for because I received one email saying my article was accepted and then I received another email saying it wasn’t accepted. I later understood that the email indicating it wasn’t accepted was for the local content. In order for it to be accepted, I had to relate the article in some sort of way to the area in which I reside.
I had a difficult time in coming up with something to write about Twitter, let alone a hard time in relating my content to where I lived. Needless to say, my time with Examiner.com was short lived and I made the decision to stop writing for them.
My reasoning to discontinue my relationship with them was first, although I do want to focus on one topic to write about, I want it to be something that I choose and have a genuine interest in. Second, there are times I do want to write about something different other than my primary focus and when something comes to mind, I should be able to write about it. That makes me appreciate sites like Triond, Bukisa, Knol and Xomba….they all give me that freedom!
