Driving Me Crazy

What exactly is going on with triond at the moment? Not only do the viewers seem once again to be ignoring the site but posted stuff seems less creative than it was.

I have to admit that the way it is on this site at the moment is really driving me crazy, because I just never know where I am.  One day there will be plenty of views and comments, yet within 48 hours of that the stream of interest has once again dried up, and in spite of continuous and frequent use of stumbleupon, digg, facebook and twitter the situation seems never to get any better?

It may be of course that in this frantic and well overcrowded market place that is the web, there are just too many would-be scribes putting out just too much stuff for the readers to make informed choices, and sensationalist posts will always trump others, however interesting and well written they might be.  Problem is with triond, however, or at least so it seems, is that in spite of the sterling efforts made to clean things up, the search engines still avoid pointing viewers in our direction.

Not that squidoo, or indeed many other sites fare any better, yet strangely enough I still get loads of hits at environmentalgraffiti – over 700 yesterday in fact – so what exactly is the maddening problem with the friendly site we all like so much?  I have no answer, and often despair of finding a solution, because I really want to keep posting here, even if on a much reduced scale, though increasingly I wonder just how worthwhile that is?

Are the halcyon days of the web when a post could go viral and attract tens of thousands of views – something I personally experienced in June of 2010 – gone forever, because the new search engine parameters are so narrow and restrictive that such forest fires of sudden interest can never again take hold?  The adrenalin rush a writer gets from seeing this happen to one of their written works is such a buzz, yet perhaps no longer a possibility, the way things are now?

What we all want is recognition, praise and to know that our work is well received and much enjoyed by the readership, at least those of us who are serious about the writing craft, but perhaps, among the sea of literary talent on display at triond, truly good and serious scribes are the exception rather than the rule, oases of literary joy in an ocean of mundanity? If his causes offence to some, then just read some of the offerings.

Perhaps the reason that I am spending more time now writing fiction is simply that this allows me to be as creative as I like, giving me free rein to truly enjoy the process, instead of churning out yet another factual piece that, if I get lucky will attract a couple of hundred readers and earn me a few cents.  That is perhaps what most drives n=me crazy about triond – the notion that writing for the site could EVER really make the writer any money.

That good writers have gone in droves can hardly come as a surprise when things remain in this state of flux, with one day a flurry of interest then a week of none at all. residuals will make you some extra peanuts, but the fresh stuff has be pumped in continually if you want them to keep coming. The question to ask is, if you truly believe you have what it takes to be a great writer, then why write back page bits for the tabloids when you should be front page on the broadsheets?

What you want and what ou get will always depend entirely on how strongly you believe, and the willingness to go that extra mile.  I like this site a lot, but lets face it, nobody will ever get rich or famous by being top of the leader board here, nor will they make their fortune, so make the site your place for having fun and practising your craft in preparation for the real writing world.

I’m also experiencing the same problem. I hope triond will make a solution for that. on the other hand, I still enjoy writing.

Motivations for writing on Triond vary. Writers less experienced with online writing than you (like me) can put their best Triond writing out as writing samples on a resume (CV) when soliciting contract work.

In the US samples of your own commercial writing are not that easy to come by. Some time ago I wrote 7 or 8 thousand technical reports for an employer. Now I want to get back into technical writing, but my previous work is proprietary information.

If creativity is valued by employers in the UK, heck, I’m ready to move. In an interview the head of a local branch of the United States Department of Agriculture told me he wouldn’t hire me because I might be creative.

    Hi Tony,

I’m new here and haven’t encountered these problem YET! But I’m sure I will, it seems to be the trend. I think your last line sums it up exactly – that is the premise from which I’m working.

‘…Forest fires of sudden interest…’ WOW! What a line. What a tasteful way of saying Triond is going to sh** again! Well done, Tony, for speaking out.

Excellent share Tony! I however am more frustrated that I can no longer submit articles from my own computer since receiving my latest updates for java and windows. I am fortunate to have a work pc that I can rely on just to submit, but it sucks! :(

It’s sad but probably it also a sign of the “hard” times. People tend to be uninspired & less creative when their tummies are grumbling. A lot of “starving” writers resort to quantity than quality when they are down in the dumps. Thanks for the share!

The important thing for me is spreading my work as widely as possible.

I haven’t written for Triond much lately because of the amount of writing that I do for another company. And hey, that fifty bucks “end of the year bonus” sure came in handy! But my old articles here are still getting a lot of views, which I never expected. So hang in there Tony, it’ll get better.
