Some websites and online business opportunities’ being available for only people from a specific country is downright annoying.
You may have read a job ad, found that it is right for you and then realized it is only for Americans. Or Canadians.Or Brits. Well, most cases involce Americans.
Have you seen Edward Norton’s Pride and Glory? His father (played by Jon Voight) believes that the most important characteristic of being a cop is protecting each other. “We protect our own, Ray. That’s all I know.” He says this more than once. While watching your fellow cop’s back is a good idea on the street, it is quite annoying to keep doing it even when it doesn’t make sense- such as when an unethical activity is involved.
Well, while there is nothing unethical involved, some websites and online business opportunities’ being available for only people from a specific country is downright annoying.
You may have read a job ad, found that it is right for you and then realized it is only for Americans. Or Canadians.Or Brits. Well, most cases involce Americans “loving to work with Americans”,hence the title. I waited to see if this event was a seldom one. If there were only a couple of sites like these, I’d let it go.But it added up, even after I had already written a piece called How to Make Money Writing Online If you Are Not American.
After all, we all write. And we need to “protect our own” universally. And if the issue is market research, then it even gets even more universal, isn’t it?Then whether English is your native language or not is supposed to carry less importance. Why? Because well, most of the world is leading a consumerist life. We all consume. New York Times Bestseller List of books are not just made for New Yorkers or Americans. And thank goodness for that. Because otherwise, international success would only be a myth and a lot of authors would have remained broke.
I recently saw a job ad that requests book reviews. Sounds fun,. I love reading. What writer doesn’t? But then at the buttom there is a note that only writers from USA,Canada or UK can apply. Is about the location? What if I am a native speaker living in Italy? Or is it about the language? What if I live in the States but English is not my first my language? Or let’say it is a delivery cost problem. Right, because you can’t send the copyrighted material over the internet? Like I wouldn’t need to sign an agreement anyway….
This attitude is annoying. Sure, Americans might disagree but how would they feel when a great job requires only people from UK? What if you have a BA in English? What if you are an expert in the differences of American and British English? But it is not the qualifications that matter. It is the location. No. Wait. There is something wrong here, isn’t there?
Creativity, talent, discipline and hard-work are universal qualities and a good and relevant resume/writing samples should work for us everywhere. If we need to protect our own, let’s protect the craft and the concept of world wide web.

I never heard of those web sites, but I sure would like to know why its only open to certain countries.
March 31st, 2010 at 11:27 am
You are so right…’cause i’ve come across some of these websites….it’s downright unfair
March 31st, 2010 at 1:18 pm
I think you’re so right if it’s on the world wide web then it should be for everyone.

Good awareness! I, too never heard of these websites! Does not www means world wide web?
April 1st, 2010 at 5:09 am
Thanks for the support guys. I thought I had published the link to my article. Here it is:
http://www.bukisa.com/articles/209182_how-to-make-money-from-writing-online-if-you-are-not-american
I’ll also rewrite another article updating the list. It gets really annoying after a while.

What you are saying is very true. I too get annoyed when I see such ads. Great article. As 8shei8 said, www means world wide web and all the writers must be given a fair chance.

Fantastic article. I found that every site that looked promising seemed to be only for UK and US. I’m a native speaker living in Greece and online writing is my only option as I don’t speak fluent Greek and there are no tourists where I live.
Open the sites to everyone!!
April 1st, 2010 at 4:50 pm
Exactly. I wish we can all become really successful and rich and make them sorry that they missed great writers that could have brought profits for them;)

I remember this 80’s Hulk Hogan tune, “I’m a real American. Fighting the rights for every man.” Perhaps I can change that to, ” I can write like an English man, I’m sure everyone in the world can understand.” Triond still is a good place for me. Excellent write Zoey. The Bukisa article was great as well.
April 1st, 2010 at 9:15 pm
I like the way you wrote, Zoey, very interesting and frank.
By the way, I ever wrote in a US website for a short period. Open to all, but earnings for US residents only
April 1st, 2010 at 9:18 pm
Hi Zoey… i tried to click “liked it” but cannot find the button to click.
strange, something wrong with my eyes today?

Thanks, Starpisces.Don’t worry, I don’t mind extra comments.:))
April 2nd, 2010 at 3:05 pm
A nice issue to think about. Well I’m thankful that Triond has no national restrictions except posting articles in English.
April 3rd, 2010 at 4:14 am
Yes, I really admire Triond about that. It gives you the ultimate chance to be creative.
April 3rd, 2010 at 8:54 am
What’s positive with Triond is that it accepts almost any content and provides additional opportunities to earn. Well, I do hope the site becomes more effective in bringing in traffic to each writers’ articles.
April 3rd, 2010 at 8:52 pm
Critical date to post this article. If you posted it April 1st, somebody couldn\’t believe in you
) Let us know, when those websites changed their attitudes.
April 4th, 2010 at 3:43 pm
I think there will come a point when competition for the best talent that can be found will be so great that these sites that take people only from certain countries will be fewer and fewer.
April 6th, 2010 at 10:51 pm
Two thumbs up for this writer! I agree with you! It’s really very annoying for us non-Americans who has the capability to do what Americans can do.
