Some negative points to take away from your article.

Unnecessary Scare Tactics
Sometimes you have so many points to write about that two pages is simply not enough. When that happens just put yourself in the position of the reader. You will begin to see that certain details and points in your writing can be edited out to make the article shorter and much easier to follow. Stick to between three, six, nine or ten points. Do you remember that scary article with 5 pages or more? Are you still looking forward to reading dozens of those articles again?
The Long Article
A one page article is great. A two page article is long. A three page article is pushing it. Articles with two pages and more must be very interesting and very organized if you want people to read it. Yes, everyone thinks that their story is interesting. Always remember that readers tend to enjoy topics that they can relate to. If they get lost in outer space in your first paragraph, it is highly unlikely they would proceed to page number two. One glance at a long article may put most people off.
The Long Paragraph
Limit up to 5-6 lines per paragraph. Very long paragraphs gives a very similar feeling when you encounter a very long queue at the taxi stand on a hot and humid day. It’s very demoralizing and disheartening. Try your best not to test your readers patience so that they want to look forward to reading your future articles.
The Deceptive Article
Make sure the title of your article reflects exactly what your content is all about. Readers will get very disappointed if the content of your article differs from what the title says. False and incorrect information is also another way of scaring all your readers away. You may fool new readers initially but most readers would ultimately blacklist you and dismiss your articles in the future.
The Hate Article
It feels good to write about it but sounds awful when you look back at it. Articles based on strong personal opinions can be very interesting but you need to be aware that emotional articles are usually biased and one sided. To be good writer you need to show that there are two or even three sides to every story.
A hate article gets posted because the writer is simply too angry about something at that particular moment. Opinions may change after a while but the article remains a hateful one as long it’s up there. Always be professional and try making your articles as positive as possible even when it is a difficult topic to write about.
The Article You Should Be Dreaming About
Short, concise and to the point articles always gives a happy ending for your readers. That’s simply the truth. There’s nothing more satisfying than reading an article that’s not mentally draining, not too heavy in content and light for the eyes. This is especially true if you have many articles to read or have a limited time. Getting readers to follow your posts should not be a short term goal.
You want your readers to follow and enjoy your articles for as long as possible. Show mercy to your readers and they will love you for that.

This is such good advice. I do find some articles are very long and with limited time to read they tend to put you off a bit.

Yes, I tend to stop reading longer articles online, their place is in print publications. Articles that are too short are also annoying, the ones that make a point but say nothing about it. Good article Sharif, nice to see you branching out

Excellent write. We can all tend to stretch it a bit, especially when articles need more words than it takes to get the point across.

Good points and catchy title for this article. Keep it simple.

Good points Sharif. Sometimes I’ve started reading something interesting and then realised it was over 10 pages long. Some of us are good at longer articles, but I don’t think most of the time Triond readers want to read something over two pages.

you are so right! thanks for this article.
this is really an eye opener

I see you followed all the advice you gave. I read it all without a scare. This just proves your advice is correct and scarefree.

I’m guilty for writing some long articles in the past. I learned my lesson since then. I agree with your observation that long articles scare readers away. It’s good that you articulated this in behalf of the readers.

I always try to break my articles into series. It please me too, because editing it separately is much more fun. So while I don’t think my articles are scary, my comments might be. I think I just left my longest comments ever on your tast two articles (the ones about your days might be numbered here and the one on adsense):D
Sorry. In my defense, I had relevant experiences to share;)

I agree with you, Sharif. Thats the style of my writing. Short, sweet and to the point.
October 6th, 2010 at 12:51 pm
Great tips. I try to keep my articles between 300 and 400 words where I can, but need to work on not getting carried away
I will pay more attention now.
I also agree with Val’s point that ridiculously short articles are annoying. You have taken the time to visit the page and there is practically nothing there – Cheated!
It is sad though that we have reached a point that there is so much information, everything is bite-sized and no-one has time to spend reading more than a page (I am guilty as well). Instant gratification is becoming a value!! Scary stuff. I need to re-assess my values
