Here is a short list of content sites that pay upfront and have a good reputation for paying that accept international writers.
This list has been collated through Internet research, lurking forums, reviews, and blogs. This is my personal list of content sites that pay well and actually do pay upfront payments. All these websites will accept international writers. Not included are content sites that will only accept US citizens because I’m not a US citizen and could probably only write for those websites if I stole somebody elses identity. These websites screen for quality submissions with human editors. So if you are confident in your writing skills, make an application!
BrightHub – They have a confusing website and an even more confusing tier system. But they pay $10 upfront for assigned articles. You can also write whatever you want and publish with them for a pay per view rate of around $2 up for every 1000 views.
WiseGeek – They pay $10 to $14 an article and you need to write at least 5 articles a week or 20 articles a month. Application takes 3 weeks or more. You will be given rounds of test articles which are paid for in order to be accepted. There are over 500 article titles to choose from. The best thing about WiseGeek is that they pay within days of your articles being accepted.
Contributor.Yahoo.Com – This is relatively new, I know Associate Content (also Yahoo) does not accept international writers but Contributor Yahoo apparently does. They pay $2 and up until $100 for articles.
Demotix.com – This is a website for international citizen journalists. They pay for news articles and photos. If you have some background in journalism, you might want to visit this website. They syndicate your articles, and do all the marketing. When your articles or photographs are bought, they split the earnings with you 50-50. It seems like a steep commission but that actually translates to $30 and up. I’m not familiar with their application and acceptance for my country but I’ve emailed to ask.
About.com – Once slandered with the stink of unpaid writers, About.com is now a respectable content site that pays its writers (guides) $400 a month regularly for a 20 hour a week writing gig. The application to the website is competitive and will take up to 8 weeks. You need to be an expert in an open niche to apply.
Factoidz – They pay $5 to $30 for articles on assigned reviews. Essentially you write a review on a website or product and put in their affiliate links. Once the article is published, you get paid according to their ranking system for quality. It’s very vague. But you do get paid.
Constant Content – This is not a content site, more like an article broker website. You submit an article to them, they review it and accept articles according to their guidelines. The articles goes into their market, and they sell the article for you. They get a 35% commission from the sale. Some articles sell fast, others take weeks. But you’ll be surprised that most articles do eventually sell. You choose the selling price of your articles, nothing below $7 is allowed.
Update: Demotix pays 12 pounds for pictures if it is chosen to be featured in their widget. They also pay up to 500 pounds for news articles that get syndicated. Payment is promptly through PayPal.
