Choosing What to Write About for Money

I just read a discussion in a forum site about a friend who really wanted to finish his novel. However, because he needed some money for the here and now, he had to postpone that dream and find other ways to make money online such participating in a forum for some cash. Recently I was in such a dilemma.

Writing a Book
EVeryone has a book in his head. I am dying to publish my own book. Initially, I have no idea what to write about. But there was a message I wanted to convey to others like me, based on a recent challenging part of my life. And I’m hoping that one day I would be able to write it. This is my dream.

My Favourite Topics
I write for Triond very often. And thus far, my favourite topics are on writing. I love to write about my experiences writing for Triond and other writing sites. I also do some reviews and modify it to articles and publish them at Triond as well. Other than that, I write on motivational topics, for instance, setting goals and achieving them. Other than that, I sometimes relay interesting family anecdotes for remembrance.

Writing for Money
However, there were times when I had to write on other topics just to earn that extra money. On Triond, I did try to write SEO articles. I check out popular topics, find out high-paying keywords and write on these topics. They require a little bit of research and thus, I usually can’t write these types of articles on the go! These articles included assigned ones from organisations and companies. I have written for semi-government organisations before and also for an educational company over the past few years.

Recent Proposals
Recently, I was assigned to write an advertorial for our group at work. We brainstormed for ideas and I sat down to write it one morning. I only had one day to complete it and did just that in about an hour or so. It was not that difficult to write it at all. Although these are some of the articles I would write on Triond, but I deemed these as my least favourite types of articles since they are related more to my work. It was a wonderful way to showcase my writing skills. But that was not the main reason though. I genuinely wanted help my group with the advertorial.

Noticing my ability to write, a colleague had a proposal for me – that I write articles for the company and be compensated for them. When I hear that it would be compensated, it got me excited. What I was going to do was not going to help myself financially; that was secondary. The primary issue was to get myself going with my own business. I was to write newsletters which is to be given to clients. I gave this out once to my clients, but I was just not motivated to do more thereafter. But with the monetary benefits in mind, I’m more motivated to do this. It will not only benefit me, but the entire group at work. If it is money-generating, it’s going to benefit the company as well.

In summary, writing to fulfil your dreams or writing on your favourite topics may be what you like best. However, these may not be money-generating, or at least initially. And you had to resort to finding ways to write for money on per article basis. If it helps you to survive in the short run, why not? But, continue to hold on your dreams and continue to write that book!
