Beginning Writing:Atmosphere

E xplaining the importance of atmosphere to beginning writers.

There are some very important things that must happen for you to write well. This article is going to cover atmosphere. Believe it or not the location of where you write can determine how well you write.

Is it quiet?

You may have the temptation to listen to music while you write, or watch television just for background noise. These are bad ideas. Your mind needs to be consumed in your writing. Interruptions may not seem like they are interfering with your thought processes, but they are.

If you find that you must listen to music, then listen to classical or some other kind of instrumental music. If words are being sung, then your brain is picking them up and processing them. That is brain power being taken away from your writing.

Television is just bad. If you are trying to write, and the television is on, you might as well not write; unless, of course, you have the true ability to shut the thing out of your head. I know sometimes you may not be watching television, but your brother, sister, or friend may be. What can you do? Move to another room, go to the café on the corner, or train your brain to turn it out. The last method here is the hardest.

Are you isolated?

This is a little different from the quiet section, but it still involves interruptions. Are you in a place your dog, cat, brother, or roommate can get to you? When you are in your writing cycle you need to be left alone. Those around you must understand the importance of this.

So, put the dog outside, feed the cat to the dog, and feed the dog to your roommate or brother if you must. Solitude and writing go hand-in-hand.

Set the Stage!

This is not for your manuscript or even for your book. This is for you. Your designated work area should set the stage for you to write.

This does not mean that if you want to write horror that you should have knives stuck in the wall, a bottle of blood (Fake?) on the bookshelf, horror movie posters hung about, or chilling screams playing in the background. It means that the work area should be comfortable for you. If you need the props to help you write then they should be there, if you do not then do not have them.

Now that you have a setting, some peace and quiet, and are finally alone; you can now move to the next step.

Though there is a lot of truth to this fact…that one will need Atmosphere, and yes; quiet helps.

There is more to it than just that, as it is only the tip of the iceburg.

Like anything in life, we all have certain skills that we have that are inharent in each of us.

Good news is, that practic can make perfect, as this is how we learn.

Just as you did to walk, to ride a bike, and even drive a car; so to is your ability to write.

However, writing is a bit more tricky than just that.
It is after all an extension of yourself, it comes from within, raw and unpolished; we hone this craft.

Chances are if you can hold a decent conversation, than you may be able to write some decent thoughts.

Does not mean it all goes hand in hand, some people have the skill of putting foot to mouth.

That is to say, no matter how well they can talk, and
we all know person’s who may have a silver tongue.
But a silver tongue does not give that person the ability to put thought to paper….that is where the skill and practice part of your trade comes in.

Learn from others, and learn by doing.
We all like to read books, how about finding a topic that is of intrest to yourself, and then write about it.
Get your family and friends involved, for that special criticism.

We all need to be humbled from time to time, and what better way than to be crutiqed.

Now that I put my two cents worth in, and at todays market; it should be more like quarters.

I would like to say that I do agree, you do need your special space, but also take some time off once in a while.
You do not want to force out your thoughts, they should just flow off your finger tips, like a conversation does off of the tip of your tounge.

    Atmosphere:
When ever it is time for you to relax,
you can listen to some soothing music, or a history show, but just relax.
If you like to have posters of Vampires, and other things set up to put you in the mood, so be it.
Writing is personal, so however you think you need your individual space to be, then that is how you have it.
Some writers like to take vacations, or go to certain locations to write.

I for one do not like to have alot of clutter around, that causes unneeded strees for myself.

Try to mix it up, and find out what combo works for you.

For one, my brother has the talent in Aces, yet I must put a little more work and effort into my writting efforts.

Again, if this is something you want to do, then keep at it.
