Articles with No Content
Why in the world would someone want to waste their time writing an article that has no content?
Lately I have been reading a lot of articles on Triond that really has no content. By that I mean people are using 300 to 450 words and saying nothing at all. Do these people not have any pride in the articles they write or do they really think they are going to continue to get views when they really are not saying anything of value.
A good article should explain something, give tips, entertain, state an opinion or try to persuade someone do something. I can give you examples of many good writer’s whose work does just that. However, when I see a title like get more hits from using ________ (fill in any social website here) and then click on the article to see what basically is “ Stumble is a site where you get views for your website. If you use stumble and invest time you will get more views.” I get extremely annoyed. If you are going to tell me I can increase my views by stumbling then tell me how do this. (Brenda Nelson has an article that does just that.) Don’t tell me simply that using it will increase my views.
What is even more annoying is the comments I see on articles such as this. When I see a comment that says Great information on an article that has given no information I have to wonder what the commenter was smoking to come up with such a comment.
What the writer’s of such articles don’t realize is that after reading an article like this a reader is not very likely to read the next article that person has written. Eventually, he will hurt himself by publishing such articles and will actually lose his readers.
We all have days when an article we publish isn’t out best but, most good writers at least strive to write something that is worth reading. We then try and support each other by reading articles from other writers. But, how can you expect that kind of support if everything you write lacks any real content?
I for one have limited time on this site and I prefer to spend my time reading something of substance than wasting my time on an article that tells me nothing.

I am happy you are mentioning author’s pride. I have seen many pathetic articles churned out using s/w or translator and I have no idea what they want to convey. People sending me these links want me to comment. In some cases, I have obliged, but yes! i do have my pride. I have written back to some of them saying the articles needed revision, and once that is done, I would comment. I always wonder: the payout is quite low, and if it is not pride that is making them write, then what is it?
But you are not fully right about one thing: you say people will not come back to read. That may be true of really discerning readers. But many create a network of friends and say those inane comments and even earn money. But they ought to think: what is the long-term value?

I have to agree. I think some writers simply don’t understand what this site is for or how you earn income from it. Some seem to think I will write anything even if it doesn’t make any sense and then I will earn money, Oh Boy!. Well it’s not that simple.

seconded – and there are hundreds of articles published here every day that are pure gibberish … I find that most annoying … the light at the end of tunnes is that even the titles are so garbled I’m not usually tempted to open them (though some are so absolute garbage it becomes a temptation of another kind to open them and leave some really crushing comment in the hope the perpetrater will immolate him/herself on a mousemat.

What does content mean? A while ago, I used dictionary and thesaurus for this word content – it says, when you write with willingness – it is content. When someone happily writes – it is content. When someone writes with comfort and happiness – it is content. We can connect this to a triond writer as the main subject for this topic – and I will use what you had used in this article
Stumble is a site where you get views for your website. If you use stumble and invest time you will get more views.
From that sentence I found hundred of contents: (1) As a reader, the word stumble has pushed me to look its meaning, (2) From that word I learned that there is a way to increase views, (3) The sentence has encouraged me to do some research and so on… In other words – the real contents of an article is what it makes us move.
My belief is this – nobody writes without an idea about what he/she is writing. The first stroke of his pen, the simple idea starts. When he expands that simple idea, the contents follow.

You’re right Martie, your point is about quality content. but a thousand writer choose about quantity content, specially for who’s writing to earn money,(quality content is number two, but traffic is numero uno.) so, have more content thats mean more revenue. perhaps this caused by google adsense downside effect. “write for money, not for reader”.

Excellent article! This is another great topic which should generate more articles. I couldn’t agree more with you! I call these kind of articles…Article Spinning… They really don’t have any kind of content!
I think that we as creative individuals should always strive to write excellent articles! After all, We are selling ourselves too when publishing our creations.

I think it’s because Triond is one of the easiest sites to write for. Sites like e-how and WiseGeek require that you send in a writing sample before you’re accepted and I’m pretty sure any writing sent in afterwards is reviewed word for word before being published.

Now whilst I agree competely with what you are saying in your article I think I know why there are so many rubbish articles on here. The reason is that these people use Triond as a place to create backlinks for sales pages/sales articles/websites/blogs that they have created to make money. They write rubbish here to farm backlinks and make a little bit of money on the side.
This of course os a stupid idea, but it is a stupid idea that works, it is immoral and can ruin the reputation of a website but it can work. I dislike this kind of method but can admit that it can work and the results are all over the internet.

I agree with you, Martie. I think most people with empty articles are hoping for clicks. I would rather be known for the quality of my content. I have been away from Triond for a while and have noticed a lot of nonsense here since returning.

The Triond staff do not seem to care whether or not they print quality material. It is more for the quantity. Triond has its good points, but quality control is definitely not one of them. One of the problems comes for the writers when there are a limited number of sites on which they put our articles. Many times these same sites carry many poor articles. When readers do not want to go to the sites because of their poor content, then we lose out in profits and readers. Writing is an art form, and many who try to write think it is just about saying anything you want, any way you want to. That somehow makes you a writer. Spelling seems secondary, and punctuation is often off the map completely.

Basically a revenue sharing site is set up to make money from advertisers. The site owners do not really care what content is published just as long as the community continues to provide page views and impressions.
By having people post to forums, write, leave comments and read other peoples work is just busy work to keep the content sharing sites like triond going.
They need participants and they sell ad space based on how many times a page will be viewed. so what people write and if it is quality content is really not an issue.
That is why you will continue to see poorly written articles on the web. Most people use these types of sites to backlink to their other content anyway.

Good article and excellent point. Writing just get published, without saying anything useful, is like warm beer – not very satisfying in the end. One of the objectives of writing should be to impart something useful to those who read what you write – and, assuming the readers want something useful, that should guide your fingers over the keys. People who write inane phrases just to get someone else to click on their articles fall into the same category as people who click on their own articles to get paid – there’s a bit of fraud there and it demeans the profession. And, at the end of the day, unless you’re just making doilies, this is a profession like any other.

Totally agree. I am getting tough now. Look at one ridiculous article by a writer and then call it a day. If I have made that particular writer a friend then I unfriend them. Likewise, if people add links to their websites as part of a comment on one of my articles I delete it. And if anyone gives me the I shall scratch your back if you scratch mine routine their comments are instantly deleted and, if they send me a direct message along similar lines, I instantly delete it and block the writer.

I totally agree. I just read an article on how to ‘fix computer problems’ and at the end I was none the wiser. 500 word article of opinions and useless advice but no substance. Irritates the crap out of me, to be honest.
