I have seen first hand that what you say is true. Thank you for sharing this with everyone. There are some people who love to write, really want to, but don't know how to get published, and this article is perfect for those people.

An aspiring writer can join the right circles (literary circles) and host open mic shows for other local writers/artists, start reading/writing programs for others interested in writing, in order to gain those contacts you mentioned. Like you said, prove yourself to the publisher, and give to your community too.

Hi Diane -- It depends on the situation whether going the agent or self-publishing route would be better. If you are good at marketing and have a lot of contacts already, self-publishing might be a good option.

I am in the planning stages of a book about my son's cancer diagnosis and treatment, as well as another on farming. I have purchased a copy of The Canadian Writer's Market, and have read about query letters and submissions. My question is, with the self-publishing available now is it still better to work with an agent and publisher? Any advice would be welcomed. Thank you!

This was the most helpful article on publishing that I have read yet. I am super nervous about the whole thing and this really helps me think and stay focused on not only the things that are important to me but what is important to the publisher.
