Questions to Ask Before Becoming a Freelancer

If you are considering a career as a freelancer, or perhaps even the suggestion of freelancing appeals to you, ask yourself these questions to explore freelancing as a way of life for you.

Like any change in career, becoming a freelancer needs careful consideration. As attractive as the freedom of working for yourself may be, it can still be a rather nerve-wracking consideration. You need to be informed as to what it involves and you need to make a well thought-out decision. It can be rather overwhelming, so, here are some questions that you can ask yourself in order to try to sort out your thoughts and gain clarity on the issue.

Why do I want to be a freelancer?

Be very honest with yourself. You need to know that you are doing it for the right reasons and not just to escape your current job. You must want what freelancing offers not just think that it’s a way out of a current unpleasant situation.

What service or product will I be providing customers with?

You need to know exactly what you will be providing. Not just “writing services”, but “writing articles on health-related topics for web content”. Your new freelancing business is a goal. Goals need to be specific. If you are vague about your service, you will battle to focus and succeed.

How will I obtain customers?

As a freelancer, it is your responsibility to get the work. You can no longer rely on the company’s marketing department. You are the marketing department. So, ask yourself, what is the most effective way to get customers and are you comfortable with it? Many people are not marketers and battle to sell themselves. If you are prepared to jump in and learn, good.

Can I get by with a varying income?

Freelancers don’t get a regular salary check. It depends on the work that you obtain. Some months may be good, some may be rather dry financially. You need to be able to handle those tough months without too much pressure.

What is my service or product worth?

You need to do the numbers. Work out how much you feel you can charge and how much time you want to or will be able to work. Does this at least cover your cost of living? If not, you need to rethink. Can you up your service and charge more? Or can you work more hours?

What type of work environment do I enjoy?

As a freelancer you are – at least initially –a one-man band. In all likelihood you will be working from home – alone. The question is: are you going to get lonely? Are you the type of person who likes and needs to interact or discuss ideas? Think about how you will handle this.

Am I disciplined enough?

Freelancers can mostly set up their own schedules, but, it does take discipline. No one is breathing down your neck (except possibly the client) and you need to get your act together. You can’t let distractions and interruptions get in the way of your work. It’s easy for clients to find other service providers if they are not happy with you.

Am I passionate about this, do I have the drive to make it work?

As with any new venture – and some might say especially with freelancing – things can start out very tough. You really need to know that this is something you want and that you will make this work.

The more aware you are when you make a decision, the more likely you will make it work. Ask yourself these questions and then decide if you want to take the freelance option to the next step.
