When you set out to make a living as a freelance writer you have to prepare yourself for the reality of the situation. There are some things you need to know about your financial future if you are going to be a freelance writer. It’s a long hard process that takes time to reap benefits from.
Freelance writers do so because they love it. Those attempting to make a living as freelance writer must be fully aware of what is actually going on in the world around them. They must also be fully prepared to save a few months worth of bills if they do not have another source of income in the home when they begin the endeavour of freelance writing. The reality of freelance writing isn’t what is often envisioned when dreaming of being a writer.
Dreaming of paying all the bills instantly with money left over as a freelance writer. This isn’t anywhere near realistic. The fact is that it can take months maybe even years for a writer to earn enough to pay the bills. The beginning of freelance writing means that you have to pay your dues. When they say dues they mean dues.
It takes time to establish yourself in the world of freelance writing. It can take years to get a study enough stream of income to make writing a full time job. When you freelance for a living you don’t have the luxury of having a study employer; instead you are left with a number of clients that can vary as much as the weather. Then there is the time that you have to spend researching guidelines for the publications you wish to submit to and the stacks of rejection letters that are likely to come in even for the best written work. You must not forget that some publishers require letters be sent in first as they do not accept unsolicited works to their publications.
While every freelance writer dreams of having their own by-line attached to their work this isn’t always the case. There will be times when those starting out in the world of freelance writing will have to write in a ghost writing capacity. This usually means that the writer agrees to give up all rights to the work they have so painstakingly created in exchange for a one time payment. The rate of pay isn’t anywhere near what those that want to make a living as a writer dream about when the first begin thinking about it.
The easiest way to begin with freelance writing today is over the Internet. There are a number of freelancing sites on the web where writers can bid on projects to write for others. There are also a number of sites where writers can submit their own content for revenue shares in order to get their name out there. These sites take time to see earnings from but they are a great way to work on skills while creating a portfolio of samples for potential clients.
Many beginning writers are not comfortable writing about things they have not experienced first hand. This is a fear that must be overcome. There are going to be times when you have to research a project, and the time spent researching can seem endless. Learning how to research and incorporate sources into articles without having a long list at the end of the article is tricky. There are some tools that every freelance writer must have before they begin working to ensure that they are prepared for every possibility.
Pens, pencils and notepads for note taking. While you might not think these are important you would be surprised at how often you can come up with an idea just to forget it because you couldn’t write it down. There are some writers that opt for small pocket tape recorders but there are some that find this option to be too expensive when they first start out. The freelance writer must also not be afraid to invest in a thesaurus and a dictionary. The thesaurus is to help them find the word they are thinking of but can’t actually get and the dictionary is so they can make sure what they are writing or researching means what they actually think it means.
Writers with patience can use the type writer for written works although there aren’t too many that still do. Most have gone to the word processors of personal computers. When it comes to submitting to on-line websites writing a complete article in your word processor and saving it before you submit to an on-line publishing forum will prevent a lot of heartache. When submitting to an on-line publishing forum that doesn’t have a function to save a draft there is a possibility that you could spend hours writing, editing and rewriting just to lose the entire work due to an Internet glitch or computer problems. This is something that freelance writers want to avoid at all costs.
Editing is something that freelance writers have to learn to do also. When submitting to publishers you want the work to be as error free as possible. Letting the work rest for a little while before editing it for the last time can assist in making sure that it is as well written as you can get it. Sometimes there will be the need to have someone else read your work before you edit or submit it. When a writer reads their own work it is perfect most of the time because they read what they intended the work to say instead of what is actually on the page. The writer knows what they were attempting to say but the reader does not which is why readers will find errors the writer didn’t notice rather quickly.
Freelance writing rates are very low when first attempting to start a career because no one knows who you are or what type of quality you deliver. There are those that are looking for high quality content for websites but are on tight budget with an even tighter turn around time. These are a good place to begin but you have to be careful to make sure that you can deliver the content. The amount of time it takes to produce content will have an impact on the rates that you are willing to work for. The idea of freelance writing is to avoid working for minimum wage at a job that you don’t enjoy so you want to make sure that you are as efficient and fast as possible in order to make your earnings come out above minimum wage.
Most freelance writing jobs for the Internet are on a per article basis meaning the more articles that you can produce in an hour the higher your average hourly earnings will be. Writers must build a reputation so when first starting out with low budget, quick deadline projects it is vital that great attention is paid to the projects being bid on. So how do you decide which projects to attempt when first starting out and how much to charge?
When a freelance writer first begins they want to stick with topics they are either familiar with or want to learn more about. Subjects that a writer cares about are often the ones that they will be the most careful writing and researching. You have to ask yourself if you are ready to work long hours for little pay to build a reputation as you rush to meet deadlines that seem nearly impossible for even the most efficient person to meet? Are you ready to see someone else’s name attached to work you stayed up days on end to produce until you can find a publisher to take a chance on you?
If you have a good grasp of the fact that you won’t begin to make enough to make your living immediately, might have to give up the rights to your work and may never be able to get your own by-line then you are ready to be a freelance writer. There is the possibility of making a living as a freelance writer but it might not be the living that you thought it would be. You will have to make some sacrifices along the way so you have to make sure you actually want to be a freelance writer and have taken a look at all of the options that are in front of you. Never forget to take advantage of all the opportunities presented to you if you are serious about making writing your career choice.
When you can accept all the realities and hardships associated with being a freelance writer then you are ready to pursue your dream.

You make some really good points in your post, but something I’d like to add to what you said is that the real money in having a freelance writing business doesn’t come from writing.
It comes from publishing and selling your own work. For example, writing an ebook or special report.
Of course, even this is something that takes time, it takes effort and it takes finding an audience who wants what you have to sell.
In a way, you become your own best client.
If you’re just starting out, it’s a very good idea to have a plan. Start with the end of your business in mind. What are your goals? What kind of lifestyle do you envision? What kinds of writing do you want to do?
And then it’s equally important that you think about building as many different income streams into your business as you can. That way, you give yourself a bit more of a cushion during lean times and also aren’t dependent upon one client or one way of making money.
You might have to go outside your comfort zone or learn how to become good at new skills – but the end result – being able to make a living as a freelance writer – is well worth the effort.

Being a freelance writer takes courage. It also takes common sense. And it takes a leap of faith. All of these things are in your article.
I’m trying to be a freelance writer because I love writing and because I would like to supplement my income. Right now I’m just on Triond with 110 articles and making a couple of dollars a month. Hopefully, July will be the first time I make over $3.00. If I make a little more every month I’ll be happy. But as you know you have to establish yourself first as a freelance writer and I’m still trying to establish myself.
Good article.

wow! It’s about time that someone has written a true and honest account of the reality of freelance writing. THANK-YOU! sorry to shout but I have been writing online for 7 months now mainly out of a need to have a creative outlet. After becoming unemployed and no job prospects I started to get into this crazy world of Internet writing. I have never been one to be gullible and the stories of riches from using the correct keywords are overwhelming. To think that people fall for this, but anyway, I know why I write. I probably could make more money if I altered my writing to rank higher on searches, etc. But for me, that is not why I started writing. Yes I have dreams of writing a book but not dreams of huge wealth. I very much enjoyed your truthful article and I hope more naive wanna-be’s out there read it so that they do not waste their time.
