Paying the Bills While Working From Home as a Freelance Writer

The dream of working from home and the reality are two different things. The goal is to pay the bills and have money left to do the things you enjoy. When you work from home, sometimes you have to adjust the budget and cut back to cover expenses.

Setting your own schedule and working from home is what a freelance writer dreams of. The life that is dreamt of is one of luxury. The idea behind working from home is the freedom to set your own schedule, while not only paying all of the bills without any problems. This isn’t always the case, there are times which are all too familiar to those that work at home when money gets tighter than they had ever imagined.

The pay of freelance writing can be rather low at times, and very slow at others. This means that the freelance writer must always be thinking and planning ahead until they have a study stream of clients to ensure they have enough earnings to pay the bills each and every month. Knowing exactly what the monthly bills are is a must for those that want to work from home as a freelance writer.

For instance if you have a mortgage to pay prior to taking the step of working from home you will want to ensure that it is current. Then you want to ensure that you have at least six months worth or mortgage payments set aside. If it’s at all possible you want to do everything that you can to ensure you have decreased the amount of time left to pay on your mortgage by as much as you possibly can. Then you want to focus on having six months worth of your other expenses saved up to ensure these get paid as well in case your career doesn’t take off as fast as you would like it to.

Paying the bills as a freelance writer working from home requires that you have the ability to focus and the determination to succeed. You have to focus your energy on different income generating revenues in order to ensure that you are not solely dependant on one source of income. Spreading out income sources is a good idea but at the same time you have to be sure that you have not spread yourself too thin. There has to be at least one additional source of income that you can use to make up for a loss of income should it stop suddenly.

Those that have children at home such as stay-at-home mom’s have other things to consider as well. Can you make enough time for writing to ensure that you have enough income to pay the bills and take care of your child’s needs while caring for them full time as you work at home? It is difficult to work and be the sole caregiver of a small child but it is not impossible.

You must be prepared when it comes to paying the bills working from home as a freelance writer. Planning has to be done carefully, you have to know each and every expense you have to pay out as well. You also have to have back up funds and more than one income source. The skill of planning for emergencies is one that you must develop long before you begin to attempt paying the bills as a freelance writer.

Economic security can be achieved with freelance writing but you want to make sure that you fully understand your financial stand point. You want to know what you have to pay and what you have to make to ensure that everything is covered. There are going to be surprises that come up when you begin attempting to pay the bills with your writing so you want to know that you have a realistic expectation of how much you can make. Then you want to adjust accordingly.

Nice article. Like Ben said, I would also like to survive on just my writing income. But, we freelance writers just can’t. Thanks for reminding me that there is more to life than just buying candy. I liked your proffessionalism. Can’t wait to hear more from you.
