This is an article geared to help aspiring feature writers.
When a news story is published, you will notice that just the bare facts are given by a reporter. However on closer examination you may feel that you could possibly satisfy the readers’ desire for extra information and comment. This is your chance to become a feature writer. Your role is to do one or two or even all of the following – inform, instruct or entertain. At last you can get an opportunity to show how good a writer you are as there is greater scope for expression and revealing your style of writing.
Features come in many forms, as their sources abound wherever people and places are. Other sources are personal experience, personal observation, movies and a wide range of publications. Once you have a rough heading, write down at least 20 questions based on WHO, WHERE, WHY, WHAT and HOW. These will help you to write a good article on a subject even if you know very little about it. The important thing is to get the right answers and present them accurately and fairly.
The worst error that you can make is to submit a feature article that is not topical. It is best therefore to begin a news feature with a topical lead, referring to the news story that made you write the article. While you endeavour to indulge in facts, do not be afraid to throw in some of your own ideas. If necessary try to answer the question – what next? Do not however leave your readers hanging.
It may be your wish to specialize in a particular subject, but you can write feature articles on a wide range of subjects. Once you make up your mind, start writing and you will fulfill your desire to develop readership appeal.
