Patterson attempts to incorporate a historical context to many of the Canterbury Tales. Contrary to the title, Patterson’s book focuses on the literary over the historical. He includes small pieces of evidence from historical references which are relevant to his discussion. His book is verbose and unorganized at times. In his defense, he is a well known scholar and pulls sources from numerous places to build his arguments.
