Point of View in Writing

What is point of view and do you want it??

Point of view is who tells the story.

Point of view is one of your best tools in writing!

First person point of view-  Using 1st person is like the author is speaking to the reader.  If has a more intimate feel and is easiest to show main characters thoughts. The only draw back: all the action is seen by the main character.  1st person is also easier for a new writer to write.

Third person point of view- Instead of using ‘I’ the author will use she/he.  3rd person is easier for the reader to superimpose themselves into the story. In 3rd person, the story can follow more of the action and the reader gets more than one point of view.

Omniscient- The story is told from the narrators point of view.  This is the hardest point of view to pull off.

The biggest mistake with point of view is changing characters point of view rapidly or ‘ping pong’ point of view; it confuses the reader!  Change the point of view with chapter or scene breaks.
