Noun Clauses

A noun clause is a type of dependent clause that functions the same way as a noun in a sentence. It occupies the positions of nouns in sentences such as subject, direct object, indirect object, predicate nominative, object of the preposition, and appositive.

As Subjects                           Whatever you like is not necessary.

                                                What you said was unacceptable.

                                                Whoever says it makes me uncomfortable.

                                                Whoever lives on a farm often eats home-grown food.

As Direct Objects               I think that your presence is important.

                                                I believe that life is wonderful.

                                                I gave whatever you wanted.

                                                I claimed that the world is round.

As Indirect Objects            Give whoever comes to the door a donation for Farmer’s Aid.

                                                I sent whoever needed five boxes of used RTW’s.

                                                Wilson promised whoever listened to him a gift.

                                                Faye gave whoever liked children books.

As Predicate NominativesThat is how you look at life.

                                                Your idea is what we need.

The performance of Camille is what we have been waiting for.

My attendance is what matters you most.

As Objects of Prepositions     Crops are fertilized with whatever will make them grow fast.

The dance performance may bring pleasure to whoever attends.

Melinda learns on how she lives her life to the fullest.

The meeting gives us ideas on how we survive in the business.

Salmon know to which river they must return.

As Appositives                       Professor Marquez praised Ms. Sanchez, who is the friendly and approachable instructor.

                                                Our resolution, that the group be expanded, required money.

                                                Our decision, that education is not the best option, did not attract the attention of our boss.
