Variations of Tone Changes and Writing Styles for Different Audiences

This discusses writing styles in relationship to college.

There are different ways to communicate with different people, especially on the internet. The way I communicate with my sister via e-mail will not be the same as I communicate with my professor.

The tone of my voice is implicated in the tone of my writing. The way I use capital lettering can influence the importance of a thought I wish to convey. By using much capitalization in my speech, it may appear I am shouting.

Professionalism is conveyed in a more defined tone when communicating with my instructor/professor. I need to be concrete with my information and ideas as well as perform a complete and concise assignment.

I want to be friendly and happy with my relatives when I communicate with them via e-mail. I want them to sense I enjoy talking with them. I use a more conversational tone of speech. “Hi. How are you?” is a typical opening line statement to a friend and relative. I certainly would not start my conversation with my professor in that typical way. It would be inappropriate. My relationship is different with my instructor as it is different with my friends and relatives. The tone and style I use in my communication creates a proper format and if needed a comfort zone for the audience or person I am talking to. My classmates need to feel we are on a team. My communication needs to be conversational as well as helpful and friendly.
