Steps to Effective Journalism: Tutorial 1

The first in a series of articles on how to succeed and thrive as a journalist.

Dear readers, are you looking to find your niche in the writing world? Are you gifted? driven? passionate? These are all necessities if you are looking for success in the world of journalism. The best journalists are the ones whose work the public return to again and again and pass along to their friends, colleagues and so forth.

Key One: Writing a hard hitting article

Anyone can write an article, but writing one that gets other people’s minds going, now that is a real challenge. If you are anything like me though, you enjoy a challenge. My dad used to say that writing was for drunkards and bums, I quickly set about to change his perspective.

I usually write about the things that affect both me personally and society as a whole.  Keep your writing coherent,do not go off on tangents. The reader does not want to have to decipher what is being written, they want it to be direct.

Key Two: Backing up your viewpoints

If you are going to write something, make sure you have done your research. Poorly researched work will only make you seem foolish and will be a stumbling block on the road to success. Make sure your sources are reliable. When answering reader questions, be sure you do not come off as rude. Rudeness repels prospective readers from coming back to see what else you have to offer.

On the other hand, I understand some people just like to be critical because it is the high point of their day. As for these types of people, do not let them get you down.

Key Three: Defending your work

I do not mean copyrighting when I talk about defending, at least not in this case. What I mean is standing up to those who would seek to beat your work down. If you know you have written a worthwhile piece, stick by it. For a journalist, writings are like our children, we defend them to the best of our ability.

If you are going to write something, especially anything controversial, you best be up to the critics. Why? Because it has been my experience that they come out of the woodwork like moths to a flame.

Thank you all for reading, God Bless and take care.
