How to Write Awesome Fantasy

Ever wondered why you fantasy story wasn’t catching people’s attention? Or maybe why it was getting such bad reviews? Or you just want to learn some tips for writing it well before you get started? Well here are some self-help notes for you.

#1: Fantasy is creative! It’s something that is otherworldly! Which means, don’t write something everyone else writes about. Yes, your vampire story may be awesome and greatly written, but there is about a hundred more with the same exact plot and idea… try adding in new creatures that no one has heard of, or doing something that type of fantasy(i.e. knights, vampires, werewolves, etc.) has never done before. You know… like maybe make the vampire’s die under the moon…or a whole new species, that is the polar opposite of vampires.

#2: Detail… I don’t know how much I can say this enough, I learned the hard way what happens when you don’t add detail into a fantasy… and it isn’t pretty. Your masterpiece could become a confusing disaster if you don’t add detail. Subtle-ness is not something to have in a fantasy.

#3: Don’t create a generic character… How many times do you see the same poor girl/boy with no future suddenly have magical powers? Or the distressed teen who suddenly meets a vampire that whisks them away! Or even worse, the vampire and the vampire hunter… These all are so overdone no one will keep interest.

#4: A sad ending is perfectly fine in Fantasy, actually I would think a sweeter approach. It shows that even in fantasy there is can be a realistic ending. Fantasy is not a fairytale, so don’t treat it as one.

#5: There isn’t any real rules you should follow for any individual fantasy character, so relax!  Your faerie doesn’t have to be a small girl with wings and your werewolf doesn’t have to be injured by silver bulllets. Just make sure you mention that little note…

#6: Give your character’s simple names. You don’t have to, but a complicated name like “Zaricottoryola of Merdith” should seriously only be used in medieval stories of if required for you story.

#7: Bad guys can be good… in fact they can be cool. The villian doesn’t have to be some wart-faced witch from Oz or some old graggly pirate from neverland.

#8: Let other’s read your work! This is extremely important! That way you can know if it makes sense and if it’s interesting…

#9: When writing about your characters, clothing can be unique… but not unrealistic. Unless your character has an immunity to the weather… don’t dress them half naked. And if your character is a fighter… don’t give them layers and layers of fancy clothing that would no way help them fight.

#10: Lastly, don’t make any of your character’s invincible… Every one has a weakness, even fantasy characters! Making them impossible to beat or fight is just an easy way to make it hard for the reader to relate to the character. Yes, it is cool to be perfect… but no one is. Unless of course that is what your character’s magical or mythical power really is…

Now have fun writing your Fantasy! Hope it be the best!
