SUBJECT: MEETING IN GHANA, AFRICA
Hello. In regards to your request on global business in Africa, I’ve gathered the most useful tools to make sure your meeting is a complete success.
The keyword for this meeting is flexibility. Ideas and thoughts of persons are constantly changing. An extremely positive work ethic exists, so you shouldn’t have a problem getting down to business. They pay strong attention to the law and avoid anything illegal.
In addition, in Africa they value collectivism more than individualism; therefore any decision made won’t be solely yours. The meeting should be conducted as a team effort. Their sense of time is expansive; there is no need to rush. They are more focused on getting things accomplished than what time the meeting begins. In Africa, they also are famous for entertaining and making their company feel welcomed.
~ Dress Conservative ~ Be Condescending
~ Be Confident and Open-minded ~ Pronounce their names wrong
~ Shake Hands ~ Show stereotypical beliefs
It is not required for you to give gifts, but if you receive one make sure to accept it with your right hand. Using your left hand to accept gifts is a sign of disrespect. Also, avoid too many gestures, especially the thumbs-up (it is considered rude).
Finally, as a woman don’t be too forward. Let the men initiate the greeting first. Women are still seen as meek and soft, unlike here in America. It is your job is to just accept. In a way, it is a gender bias so be sure not to over step your boundaries.
Overall, when in doubt just relax. Their overall atmosphere is slightly more relaxed than ours.
