How to write a Film Review

Purpose

The purpose of any review, weather it be on a novel or a film, is to demonstrate your own text opinion and evaluation of a given text, usually to an audience that is unaware of the designed to enable a responder to choose whether to see the film or not. It is very important that you remember that you are evaluating it.

Language

Either formal or informal- depending on the intended audience. If it is for a literary review, it will be formal. If it is for a magazine, it will be more “conversational” and less formal

It should be written in the first person’s point of view.

Hints for writing an effective review

Make sure that you are clear on your intended audience. From this you will be able to determine whether your tone should be formal or informal.

Mention various elements of this film, i.e. consider addressing the acting, the soundtrack, the lighting, the characters and the themes.

When you make your evaluation, make sure that you can find evidence to support your opinion

Include strengths and weaknesses

Limited or brief summary of plot, merely to give context for discussion.

Structure

Who is the text form?

Who is the composer?

What s the genre?

What is your opinion?

Body

Brief plot outline- To put the responder in context

Be careful not to give away the entire story/plot

In other paragraphs, include aspects of the text (characters, setting, techniques, etc.)

Strengths

Weaknesses

Conclusion

Restate you opinion.
