How to Improve Your Essays

Five tips on improving your essay writing. Part one of three.

I’ve been a writer of many essays since I entered my Secondary school life. I always set high standards of writing, and I set the same standard for any other schoolmate’s essay. Now, I’m going to share some very important tips to improve your essay writing. It may seem obvious to many, but it’s still uncorrected in many essays, on paper, or online.

  1. Use Proper Spelling

It’s important that proper spelling is used in any essay. Never use leetspeak, ever. It’s a common mistake in many badly written online essays. If a person is going to spend five minutes to figure out what you are writing in a small paragraph, then he/she is probably going to give up after a while.

    • Example 1:  “i wil avinge ttthe anguls!!!” Rey shuitted, alunacy in hs eyis az e pusshed Keine bak his sord dansing in tthe firlite. “I will avenge the angels!” Rey shouted, a lunacy in his eyes as he pushed Keine back, his sword dancing in the firelight.
  2. Be Descriptive

There are many people who complain that their essays are too short. Now, you’ll need to learn to be descriptive. Use similes and metaphors to your advantage. Not only do they lengthen your essays, they also add a certain amount of depth into it. However, do not use them wrongly. A wrong simile or metaphor used can spoil the essay. You need to use it to believe the effect it has on any essay.

  3. Plan it Out

A plan is an essential part of any essay. Ask any experienced writer, and you’ll find out that the beginning is easy and the end is easy, but what about the middle? Just bullet down the essential information you want your readers to know. It doesn’t need to be anything complex. If you get this done beforehand, it’ll save you the trouble in the long run.

  4. Transitions Are Important

I cannot stress this enough. To convey your idea effectively, you need to use transitions. Otherwise, your whole essay will sound very choppy. Transitions such as However, Meanwhile, But, Essentially, are very useful.

  5. Proofread

Proofread, Proofread, and Proofread! Once again, this is very important. No matter how good you think your writing is, always proofread. Things look different when you write them and you read them. When you proofread, you’ll catch mistakes you don’t remember making, or see places which could be improved on.
