People know that they have the ability to write, but how do they become successful at it?
I once had a teacher tell me that there is a book in every writer. All you have to do is find it. Easy said, but how do you start?
Well, writing is natural in many people today. They know that they have talent, but how do they put it to good use for them? First, of all, you have to believe that good writing is not always paid writing. Get your name out there, even if you volunteer to do a non profit organization’s newsletter. Name recognition is important. Some day someone will say, “You are a writer, and I need to have this written up.” Volunteer organizations love writers who will do newsletters, etc. Volunteer your time and talent, it will be worth it in the end result, paid writer.
Volunteer to teach children some writing skills. Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCA and YWCA offer classes for children. You do not have to be a pullitizer prize winner to teach children to write and enjoy it. Someone will recognize your talent and perhaps give you a chance to get paid for your writing.
Join a Writers Group or form your own. They are a teaching tool in itself. Writers Group critique each other and offer suggestions on how to improve your writing skills. A group of your peers will keep your writing skills current and give you ideas of how to use them. Sometimes the group bands together to search for contests and other writing opportunities.
Write something every day. No matter what it is, set aside some time daily to write something. A blog on the internet, an entry into a journal, a letter to a friend, or anything that uses your skills. Daily writing keeps you current in your skill and helps you avoid writers block.
If you get writers block, don’t push yourself to write. The juices will flow again when you keep writing daily. Read a good book to generate those juices again. Look for style, adjectives, and adverbs that the writer uses. Learn while you read. If the author is not that good, learn from his mistakes. Sometimes bad books find a publisher even though they are not exactly perfect.
Writing is a gift, but also a skill that must be honed. A writer must have a stiff upper lip, and not be discouraged by a rejection or constructive criticism. I have judged many contests and have found that even the worse sentence structure and verbage has a good story to tell. Don’t give up. Keep those writing juices flowing and write, write, write.
