Generating Ideas to Write for Magazines

Writing for magazines can be a great way to work for freelance writers. But writers be warned, there could be fierce competition and thus it can be hard to generate new or interesting ideas to write for magazines. Here are tips to help you.

1. Writers can find inspiration all around them. Look at newspapers, magazines, books and television. You are not copying from anyone but looking at something fresh and finding ideas.

2. Do your research about the magazine, what sort of articles to they include? If they are a local magazine, for example then finding something suited for a national magazine may not interest them. You need to do your research to understand what angle and type of article you need to write.

3. You may have heard this one before, write about something you know or care about. It is much easier if you have knowledge about the particular topic and some passion to write about it.

4. If you are writing about something that you do not particularly like or know about then do you research. Search on the internet, read book, visit the library-do whatever it takes to understand what you are writing about.

5. Most writers have worked in other careers before. If that is the case for you then why not write about your previous career and whatever knowledge you have acquired before? So if you have worked as a nurse you could write an article about nursing either intended for nurses or people who are entering the profession.

6. Hobbies are a good subject too. With sports, reading and films you could write a review. If you are a keen footballer and watched a game you could write about the game. If you travel often to exotic locations you could write about the locations you have visited and provide a guide to locations.

7. Have you ever had personal experiences that are funny or even sad? You could write about these experiences and share with the readers. Even if something like this has never happened to you what about the people you know? Have they had a romantic encounter that they are happy for you to write about?

8. If you are a parent you could write about the turmoil’s of parenthood. You could provide useful advice, tips and articles to other parents about raising children.

9. How-to articles are popular. You could write about a variety of issues and provide a how-to guide for readers. (Examples; how to write an article, how to generate more traffic to your website, how to change a light bulb….)

10. Think carefully, as though you are the reader. What sort of article do you think has not be written but should be? If it helps, write your ideas down and keep brainstorming.

You will not always get ideas straight away, that’s fine. You sometimes get ideas at the weirdest places, like in the middle of a conversation someone may say something and you think “that would be a great idea!”.

Keep your content original and from a fresh, new prospect.
