This essay compares creative writing such as essays and reviews to a journalistic style that appeals more to news.
The emphasis on creativity and not following a rigorous path in essays is what makes me more interested in the style than a news article, for example. There are significant differences in the types of writing that would lead one to favour more than the other and I will attempt to outline them.
A journalistic news article follows a very formal structure. One must state the facts in a report of what actually happened during an event. The inclusion of elements like interviews or photography can be used to liven up a news article. This is why the style does not interest me as it is too rigidly structured and doesn’t allow for enough inventiveness. Certainly, there are people that appreciate this style of writing the most, but I’m not one of them.
Writing an essay or even a similar article such as a review allows for a lot more freedom in the composition. One can include opinion in certain pieces of this sort, but also delve into more open-ended examples as well. Essays appeal to me because they expand on a main point, while a review is interesting because it qualifies an artistic element. The amount of freedom in this type of writing is why I prefer it and perhaps the reason I chose to take English in school instead of Journalism.
Different styles of writing appeal to different kinds of people. I enjoy the amount of creativity that can be found in the written word and this is why I took English in University rather than Journalism. However, a formal and factual based writer might prefer the more rigid approach of a journalistic news article more.
