We Can Do Without The “At”

Prepositions have a place, but not here. Why & when did it become acceptable to end a sentence with a preposition?

When I moved to the Midwest, and became aware of the idiosyncrasies, grammatically speaking, I really thought it was a geographic assault to my ear; however, I realize that poor grammar is an accepted form of communication, everywhere.

“Where were you at?“  Was the at really necessary to ask the question? I don’t think it was. The question conveys the appropriate message, clearly, without the extra added Preposition.  It is correct to ask, “Where were you? Why is the added at necessary?

Did someone say, you sound too snooty, or smart, or who do you think you are by speaking your language, well? I’m really not too sure what happened, but I think it has to stop.

During the 60’s, Goldie Hawn was in a TV Show, “Laugh In” and on this show, they would say “Here Come the Judge” and “Where’s it at?” They were making fun of the English Language; however, I fear that over the years, some people really thought this was appropriate usage of the word at.

There was also a song, around the same time called, “Come on, let me show you where it’s at.”  “The name of the place is, I like it like that.” I don’t recall who sang it, but the word , at, was only used for it’s kool factor. It did not imply that the use of at was OK.

So, if there are anyone out there who insist that at can be used without an object, within the sentence then you’re mistaken.

Since at is a Preposition and requires an object, in the form of a noun (person, place or thing) then eding a sentence with at, is totally incorrect. As an example, Were you at the store?”

I know i’m going on and on, but I find this so irritating and I really don’t want to get into the habit of ending any sentence with the word at.

Thanks for listening to me rant, just a little. I know that at times, I sound like an English Teacher; however, it is a dirty job and someone has to do it. I guess it’s me, at my laptop.
