English Wonders: Word Records

The English Language has many wonders in it’s words, from long words to vowel sequences.

Longest Words

Many of you have heard of the word “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” (34 Letters) from Disney’s Marry Poppins, but is that the longest word in English, if it is a real word? It is found in the Oxford English Dictionary but nowhere else. Others say “Antidisestablishmentarianism” (28 letters) is the longest English word. It is a real word according to lots of dictionaries meaning ‘the belief which opposes removing the tie between church and state’.

Here are some other long words:

- Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis (45 Letters) ‘A type of lung disease’.

- Hepaticocholangiocholecystenterostomies (37 Letters) ’The medical creation of a link between the gall bladder and each of the intestines and hepatic duct’.

- Flocci­nauci­nihili­pilification (29 Letters) ‘An estimation of something as worthless’.

- Electroencephalographically (27 Letters) ‘The electrical measurement of brain waves for medicine diagnosing’.

- Disproportionableness and Incomprehensibilities (21 Letters)

Consecutive Consonants

5-in-a-row: Backsplash, Birthplace, Lengths, Strengths, Twelfths, Downstream and others.

6-in-a-row: Latchstring, Catchphrase, Archchronicler and others.

7-in-a-row: Hirschsprung’s (Disease), even Tsktsks is a 7-letter word with no vowels!

Repeated Vowels

No Consonants: Euouae, Uoiauai

One Consonant: Ouenouaou, Zooeae, Zoaeae

Two and Three Consonants: Miaoued, Queued, Queuing, Cooeeing

Interchanging Vowels and Consonants

The longest word with interchanging vowels and consonants is Honorificabilitudinitatibus. There are others like Aluminosilicates, Epicoracohumeraler and Pararosanilines.

The longest country name with interchanging vowels and consonants is United Arab Emirates.

Most Consecutive Dots

3 Dots in a Row: Beijing, Fiji, Hajji, Bogijiab, Remijia.

4 Dots in a Row:Ujiji

6 Dots in a Row: Katujjijiit Development Corporation (Nonavut, Canada)
