VERBS – TENSES PART TWO
The past tense of many verbs is made by adding D or ED to the present tense.
Examples:
turn -> turned
like -> liked
call -> called
hope -> hoped
Other verbs, called strong verbs, change their middle vowel sounds to make the past tense.
Examples:
win -> won
dig -> dug
stick -> stuck
take -> took
A) These verbs form their past tenses by adding D or ED to the present. Write their past tenses.
live, look, pass, hiss, clean, toast, remember, pick, rake, owe,
paint, follow, listen, wash, mark, smoke, stare, stain, laugh.
B) These strong verbs form their past tenses by changing the middle vowel sound. Write their past tenses.
come, fall, drink, give, hold,run,, see, sit, sing, know, lose,
speak, stand, steal, strike, wear, swim, tear, blow, bite, spin.
C) Write these sentences. Change all the verbs, which are in bold, into the past tense.
The aircraft takes off from Liverpool and flies out to sea. It meets strong headwinds and begins to reduce speed. It arrives over Ronaldsway half an hour late. The pilot circles the aircraft twice and ground control tells him that it is not safe to land. Ground control advises the pilot to fly back to Liverpool. He follows their advice and returnsto Speke Airport where he lands safely.
D) There are twelve past tenses in this line. Find as many as you can.

PAST PARTICIPLES
When you form a past tense with an auxiliary, you complete it with the past participle.
Auxiliary verb | Past participle
……….He HAS | SAILED
Most past participles are formed by adding D or ED to the present tense of the verb.
Example: sail -> sailed
The past participles of strong verbs are formed in a different way.
Examples:
blow -> blown
do -> done
give -> given
grow -> grown
fall -> fallen
draw -> drawn
tear -> torn
go -> gone
A) Write the numbers of these sentences. By each number, find the verb and write the past participle.
1) Jack had forget his gloves.
2) The kitten has wash its face.
3) We have rake the lawn.
4) This is the letter he has write.
5) Pat had eat all the biscuits.
6) I am well know for my stories.
B) Write these sentences, choosing the correct word from the brackets.

3) Someone has ( broke / broken ) a cup.
