I’m not a great writer, I’ll admit that, but I am a avid reader. I love reading everything from epic novels to mysteries to even romance novels, but here are a couple things that turn me “off” and please me when I read a book.
Well you’re a upcoming writer and I give you the best of luck. Writing is hard for many people because to write a book, a article, or any piece of work it takes work, patience, and maybe years and years of criticisms and practice before you actually get anywhere with your writing. Also writing seems to be sort of like a clown on stage act where you’re forced to please and entertain a large group of people while they usually openly criticise and bash you. To be honest, in today’s modern age it becomes even harder to really grasp a reader’s attention and actually entertain a “average- Joe” since less and less people actually picking up a book and reading, but from my point of view I’ll explain why I enjoy or hate reading many people’s different works.
I hate it when writers gives too much details or information in a story; I have a brain too so let me use it. I understand that many writers are actually scared that they won’t give enough details in certain parts of a book and their reader might not understand what’s happening in the story or setting. I think you shouldn’t be too scared about something like this. If you’ve given ENOUGH then the reader should be able to fill in the blanks on his/her own. The hardest part I guess is figuring out what’s ENOUGH and not TOO much. I guess the most important thing to do when you are providing details is to remember not to TELL me what’s going on but SHOW me.
This doesn’t necessarily mean make sure your grammar is correct and concise. When you’re writing make sure your story FLOWS nicely. I hate reading a paragraph and halfway through I wondering uh what’s going on again?’ then I have to reread the whole paragraph again to understand the whole meaning. I can’t really explain how to make your story FLOW smoothly since many writers have different styles and employ different techniques, but always remember to make everything clear from sentence to sentence. Every paragraph should have some sort of main idea/event or something you’re trying to convey.
As a reader you don’t have to write in the way you’ve been taught all your life. I want something different, something that sets you apart from other writers; something unique about you that makes me pick up your book, stories, and reminds me of you. Make me love you as a writer, not necessarily the story you’re telling. This might take a long time to develop and actually figure out, but I think this is a very important aspect of writing. I don’t like certain writers because their writing isn’t amusing for me, and I like other writers because I really enjoy their style that’s just life. Always ALWAYS remember that you won’t be able to please everyone. Create your own style that will please your audience, whether it be a group of people or your family and friends, not the world.
I read so many stories where it’s quite obvious to me wow this is just a moneymaker isn’t it?’. This might be my own plea for today’s modern writers. Books in today’s society seem to be made mostly to appeal to a certain demographic whether it be children, adults, teens, etc and are only written to just make money. Don’t write to just make money. If you want to make REAL cash I’d suggest working in another field because you probably won’t write something like the next Harry Potter or the next Twilight so why bother trying to write something cheap for cash? I say don’t sell yourself short as a writer. Write, write, write and if money, fame, and riches come then good for you, but don’t write for it.
In the end all these sorts of rules and tips aren’t very adamant. Writers break these rules every single day and good stories never really follow any rules. These sorts of things are just rules and points that makes me enjoy a story. I enjoy reading and I hope you writers enjoy writing
Keep going and FIGHTING.
