Writing Short Stories &Ndash; How to Get It Right

How to get the plot right when writing short stories and theme ideas for short stories.

Writing short stories can be more difficult than penning a novel since a lot has to be said in a limited number of words. Because of the restricted space, plot must be precise and controlled as must the writer’s choice of words. The first paragraph should make an instant impact on the reader, grabbing his or her immediate attention. There is no time or space for the tale to gather momentum as it rolls on. A short story must be quick and snappy.

To achieve this the writer should:

  • keep centred firmly on the main plot and main characters
  • SHOW rather than tell
  • Keep the suspense and tension going from beginning to end
  • Be economic in use of words; every word must earn its living

How to Get the Plot Right when Writing Short Stories

Spend time considering the plot before writing. Planning is important for the writer to get the drama and suspense within the tale as perfect as possible.

Readers can be more critical when reading short stories as opposed to the novel where there is time for a build up of suspense. Because a short story is read more quickly, minor faults are more noticeable. So be sure to get the details right or this can spoil the reader’s enjoyment of the story.
