Word Choice Help for Amandeep13

This is a response to Amandeep13’s excellent article about alcohol. I have replaced some of her words with the "American English" options to help her fine-tune her word selection by comparing her version with mine.

Alcohol problems differ in severity from mild to life threatening. These problems concern the person, the person’s family, and other people in many ways. Despite the focus on drugs such as cocaine, alcohol use remains the number one drug problem in the United States. According to public opinion polls, over 13% of adults in the US will suffer from alcohol abuse or addiction (also referred to as alcoholism) at some point in their lives.

Alcoholism: The social drinker drinks in moderation, does not abuse the drug, and is not habituated to alcohol. The problem drinker “abuses the drug”. Withdrawal for those physically dependent on alcohol can be much more difficult than withdrawal from heroin or other narcotics drugs.

Alcohol abuse refers to excessive or problematical use with one or more of the following:

Legal problems

Difficulty in performing important tasks at school, work, or home

Frequent use in situations where it is dangerous (such as when driving a car or operating machinery)

Continued use despite having social, family, or interpersonal problems caused by or worsened by drinking

In heart patients, a single drink can reduce the efficiency of a damaged heart.

Impotence and muscular problems are additional possible complications.

Alcoholism results in poor eating habits, which can lead to symptoms of protein and vitamin deficiency.

Alcohol can cause brain damage.

Alcohol is toxic to the liver regardless of the drinker’s health.

Concentration and reaction time can be impaired by even a single drink.
