I don’t know about these remakes of just so-so movies in the beginning……….
Okay, here we go again. Now it’s Jordin Sparks in the remake of “Sparkle”. That’s just too much twinkling for me right now. Last week I wrote about Whitney’s death and that there will be no follow up ever since the Preview Showing of her Starring Role in the movie as a mother of the Singing Sisters in the new Daz…I mean Sparkle. I do not know if I want to see it actually, but I caught glimpses of my girl Whitney, and even though we know her history, her cheekbones were still intact. I’ll admit though, I would be more enthused about the movie if she was still with us. I was rooting for her so much. Really, I think we all were.
Are we going to have a new rave about a Remake like the way they treated “Dream Girls”? Something about Hollywood these days, they sure don’t know how to invent a new kind of wheel. Retreaded, retreads on top of retreads. It’s nothing new actually but must we retread the Mediocres too? Trust me, the original Sparkle with Irene Cara wasn’t all that. Oh, that’s the part Jordin Sparks will play, Irene’s role. I was young and wasn’t impressed with the movie. And Oh My that song “Giving Him Something He Can Feel” drove me up the wall what, 38 years ago. Whoops, I almost let that age rattle out of the bag, right? But it was about 1973 or 74. I heard Jordin sing it and I dare them to act like this is a good rendition of that song. It’s not. But they will act like it is and better. I saw the Trailer and believe me, I am going to run whenever I hear that song. Is this all the Movie Makers think we want to see, all about Girl Groups risings and failings and pulling up again and drug back down again and perhaps Victory one day? I don’t know but this isn’t impressive. I guess because Girl Groups are not Novel to me and never were. I loved them as I grew up, still appreciate them but any and just about every group, I guarantee you would have a story to tell. It seems like when it comes to movies someone doesn’t know that some of us want drama, action, romance, real dialogue and not so much sensation, but full characters with real experiences that we want to know about. Forgive me for thinking this way because I do have to understand the Younger Generation. Maybe they need to see these things.
But remakes sometimes bother me. For instance, you can’t find the Original Ocean’s Eleven, with Frank Sinatra. And now, where are we with those remakes, Ummmm, about Ocean’s 55 by now maybe? Sorry guys, including the Dream Boat himself Mr. George Clooney, you never could equal the modest original with Frank’s gang which included Sammy Davis, Jr., Caesar Romero, Joey Bishop, all the hip cool guys of the 60s that were swinging…..
With Jordin Sparks, sparks are going to fly! She is going to get the Hollywood treatment and I like her and always did. This is the young woman that won American Idol, probably the last time I half-watched it about six years ago maybe? I’m getting sleepy just thinking about it now. Oh hum. Anyways, Jordin does look pretty and she’s young and a nice young lady and I wish her well; the other cast members are equally sweet I’m sure but I just don’t dig the movies anymore and it has nothing to do with my Maturity but it has all to do with what I still consider quality. Give me some earthy movies like what I had grown used to such as “Love and Basketball”, “Something Different” “Why Did I Get Married?” “ATL” “Baby Boy” “Boys In the Hood” “Eve’s Bayou” “Poetic Justice” “Devil in a Blue Dress” you know, Black movies that will leave a message because of effective story lines and Acting! I know our roles in Hollywood are still markedly less, so I support them. But I do love ALL movies that have meaning such as that I will visit a theater for because they are movies based on life. I’m tired of Motown inspired movies. Sorry but I am and I think I deserve more. But these big blow-ups are usually well-received by some of us because we just don’t seem to feel we deserve more diversity and are used to formulas. Peace.

I would say the same for remade songs. I do admit that there are movies I want to see remade. One of the will be Jurassic park.
