The Struggle for a Topic

Ideas on obtaining a topic to blog about, when one is challenged to write “something”.

I’ve been blogging for over 5 years, and every once in awhile I hit the preverbial wall as to a topic I write about.

Has that ever happened to you?

I don’t know what to call it – writers block is one way…but I usually reserve that for people who are journalists or writers in a professional sense.   I’m no professional, as I still have a full time job and blog as more of a hobby.  But I digress…

Anyways, I like to make at least 5 posts a week – whether it’s something simple and crazy – or in depth and full of thought.

There are several times where I had to be inspired to write something – I had to figure out what in the world I wanted to write about.  PLUS, if I wanted to have more of an audience, I needed to find some keywords that would trigger decent ads to be displayed.

Well, here’s a quick “step by step” for what I do now in terms of getting something to write about:

  1. write about what you LOVE.  When you feel as though you’ve done that, move onto step 2.
  2. search Yahoo Buzz for topics that other people are searching.  Sometimes checking that out will make something “click”.
  3. Once you find a basic topic, now search keywords via the google keyword tool – and include those in tags – in the post, etc…
  4. now that you have a topic, and some keywords to throw into the post….you have some basics.

This is what I do when I’m “stuck”.

How do you find topics to write about?  What inspires you to “get out of that rut”?
