The “I Like It” Mystery

Getting more views on Triond articles.

I have never submitted an article here in Triond in this format. So this maybe clumsy but I’m giving it a try to satisfy your curiosity. I’ve always chosen the prose or poetry format so I can hide the simplicity of my writings beneath the rhymes. But a friend’s curiosity is worth taking on the challenge.. so here it goes.

It was very sharp of you to notice that I am getting a lot of clicks on the “I Like It” button but with no comments. I was disappointed at first, not getting any feed backs at all from people who browsed through an article. It was either they don’t like it or simply did not read it and just clicked the “like” button. Then I realized that with all their membership in social websites, they may just not have the time to read it. In average, I receive 50 mails a day, most of it junk. And that’s just from one website! Even if I had filtered them and declared all others spam I still have 20 items from friends and those that have coordination with me in my office job. So, I forgave them for not having the time to appreciate my compositions. Besides, co-workers and superiors of mine know me better for making reports and technical recommendations. And as they usually view Engineering graduates as more of a technical writer, how will I fare as a hopeless romantic? Add to that my disciplinarian approach to subordinates and hard-nosed dealing with other departments, it’s not easy to convince them of my Dr. Jekyll side.

Basically, that is the reason why you see a big disparity in the dates of my submitted articles. It was really disappointing that I put my Triond account aside but still scribbling lines here and there and tucking them in my drawer. Then one day, I opened a chain mail just out of courtesy to the sender. This was my enemy in the Triond World, the reason why my compositions are not being read. Rebellious feelings rose up within me that I was ready to delete and put my friend’s e-mail address to the spam folder and… I noticed that all those chain mails have a lot of names on it, e-mail addresses no less. And just like a light bulb lighting up over my head, I thought, why not use these annoyances to good use?

So that’s what I did, I forwarded all the links in my Triond account to all those unknown persons. Oh, same thing happened, lot’s of clicks but no comments..but I got the result I wanted and I had my revenge on those e-mails that took viewership away from the same articles. And since about 50% of them don’t read it, I sent the same link to the same person after a month and they still click on it. Of course, close friends reprimand me for saying I sent the same thing and I just say that they delete it. No hard feelings, they already opened it anyway, twice or thrice already.

This went on until I submitted my next article which is last December. By then the rebellious feelings have been satisfied and now I’m back to where I was before, a hopeless romantic. I turned full circle and realized that  no number of unwanted viewership on my articles can compare to the appreciation I get, few as they are. These days, viewership and earnings matters less than the encouragement I get from my friends and readers. I know all of us wants to get the big hits and dollars for our compositions, but from my present point of view.. They are just bonuses to the satisfying feeling of using your talent from God in a good way and expressing yourself.

For the record—! I clicked, I like it— not to satisfy your curiosity but to tell you—it’s not mystery! –and for the comment! eh,?

Good piece. I read your poetry because I like the content and style.
I post on Triond not for the money (but I’ll gladly accept it!), but for the feedback. There a few of you out there who give good positive, constructive feedback and I really appreciate it.
If I click: ‘liked it’, it is because I did and not just to give you another hit.
Now go back and post some more!
    Thanks,
    Clay

You are brilliant. I enjoy your writing for the romance and beauty of it. I must admit, you do have a way of thinking outside of the box.

you’re right… people should just click on the “i like it” because they mean it…
it’s better to get constructive crticism, or praises or encouragement, no matter how few they are ( you have a lot of comments!) rather than getting that numbers up in that i like it button without a feedback….

nice, nice, nice.! you should write more of this…

It sounds like a good way to take revenge of spammers as well as increasing views.

hahaha! This is really funny! I remember I only started good viewership when I wrote an article about how crappy I’ve become as a writer! The email thing never worked for me!

Nice i may try this, lol. I hate forwarding on all the chainmail and forwardings I get but I know a few friends who seem to take it personally if I don’t at least open the letter and acknoledge that i got it. i have tried to tell them that its considered spamming but some just don’t understand and many think that not passing it on is evil ( that a sick baby wont get the 22cents per reply that Microsoft has pledged.) this is a good way to get even. I agree the support I have gotten from my friends who have willign visited here and read my stuff far outweighs any monetary gain, but who knows one of those people may stop read a piece and enjoy it.

Nice article. I think I also have the Dr. Jekyll side. But I do not reveal in work life. I wonder how you do your work with your boss knowing these things.

Very clever idea! I think i’ll have to try that, I receive so much “If you don’t repost this your grandmother will kill you with an ipod” spam mail that this is bound to have some success!

    A very genuine thankyou!

I’ll have to read this again- I wasn’t sure what the email thing is- if it’s what I think, I did indeed started out with sharing the email way, until I discovered the posting on Facebook option. Since all my friends I email are on Facebook, I never email my articles out anymore and that with my Triond friends, is plenty satisfying. I feel your pain of the ‘like’ thing. I also feel your satisfaction.
Do you have a Facebook page?

That sounds like an interesting way to get more views but I’m afraid I’d go crazy getting that many views and no comments or likes. I’d be afraid that if anyone read it they didn’t like it enough to comment. Or that perhaps they saw it and just didn’t like it. I’m too narcisistic to be okay with that. :D
