The Female Orgasm: Writing About Public Sex

I would like to present to you a flash fiction story about a couple performing a very public sex act.  But first here is some background on how the story was written.

As we writers know, the first thing a reader sees is the title of your short story.  If the title of the story doesn’t grab the reader’s attention it doesn’t matter how good the story is the reader will never see it.  I thought I came up with an attention grabbing title.

But before I could figure out the title of the story I had to have a good short story idea.  That’s one of the cool things about writing flash fiction, once a writer comes up with a good flash fiction idea, over half of the work is done because putting the basic idea in short story form will usually allow a writer to come up with several hundred words right there.

Well, I knew I wanted my story to be about sex.  The word “sex” is always one of the top search words on the Internet.  Still, that wasn’t enough. 

To give the story more tension, I would have my characters perform a sex act in public.  The question in the mind of the reader then becomes, are they going to get caught?  This means the story would have two levels of great interest for the reader: the sex and do they get caught.

I thought I would have the sex act take place between a boyfriend and a girlfriend who are college students and the sex act would take place in a bar.  The reasons are simple.  I know a great deal about college students and I know a great deal about bars.  The locale and the characters would cry out “authenticity.”  I would know what I was writing about. 

As far as the authenticity of the sex act itself, well, every man or woman who has been sexually active has done it, including myself.  It’s just that most of us don’t do it in public.
