The Chef Lauren Rant: A Growing Trend of Regurgitated Material

From the Chef that loves to stir the pot, and why not… it’s what I do best. By the way, I’m back from Finals and I made the Deans List! Yes.

I would like every sensitive person in the room to grab a box of Kleenex and listen very closely to what I about to say.

The Rant

There are many wonderful talents on Triond, freelance and professional writers, poets, short story enthusiasts, etc. however, there are only so many times you can write about fruit, crop circles, funny signs, wacky architecture, and so many more I just can’t bring myself to mention.

Now, since I’m coming from an overstimulated mind from studying for weeks, I really have to say that when I returned to Triond I was expecting a more, one of a kind attitude. Perhaps some articles on a more cerebral level that I happen to enjoy, especially when it’s about new information, not recopied Wikipedia information that was already published for the masses and has been seen and read hundreds of times.

I think everyone is guilty on Triond of doing this only because it never hurts to toss in a completely useless article with more photography than text. Of course we have all learned that this is what sell’s.

I love keeping up with my friends articles and since I was two weeks behind and just started catching up, I couldn’t help but notice the ridiculous amounts of useless and regurgitated articles that I stumbled across on the hot list.

I’m really disappointed since I tried to read each and everyone in my spare time, even when I was studying for finals. I know Michelle Cameron Drew will kill me if she finds out I was reading in the middle of my finals.

The Rave

About that, I wanted to thank all of you for being so supportive during my two weeks of finals. It’s amazing how caring and compassionate everyone is here.

Back to the Rant

Ok,  ok, were was I? I tend to see the same information on the Hot list home page day in and day out. For those of you finding yourselves there more often than not, I do believe there are much richer articles around this site that are more original and better written. I’m not pointing fingers but, if you find your self writing articles about topics that we have seen before hundreds of times and your comments say “This has been done and I’m sick of seeing it”, then I think you may need to rethink your approach.

I know the platform has changed but, hundreds of hits doesn’t always mean you have a resourceful article. You may have just chosen the right title to spark the interest of the internet drones, digging for information that dampens the brains and brings us closer to mediocrity.

I’m not here on Triond to tell my friends and fans that theirs pieces are worthy and well written just because they’re my friends, I’m here to tell them the truth.

Now the fact that my heart was yearning to write and feature deeper and richer pieces, I chose to write at the big “B”. I think we all know the benefits and are reaping the rewards for well written material.

Final Thought

I want to see more original content, more mind provoking information, I want you to take the empty screen and start writing whatever comes to mind. Forget about Wiki, forget about resources, I want to see your true genius. We are all here for the same reason, at least I think we are.

We want to be great, we want to touch the souls of everyone that we know, we want our lives to have some sort of meaning. If you recopy the same information over and over, is this really the kind of writer you are or want to be?

On a final note, I would like to mention some original writers, that have used no resources in these pieces but, the genius of their own minds.

Lauren, the voice that speaks the truth as always! I am finding it hard to be fair to some writers, when I know I have just read the same article that has been re-constructed by somebody else, I am opening their work and…well Yawn. I thank you for naming me in this article, there are many others who deserve the spot too. There are writers who use photographs to highlight great writing on Triond, I would never try to copy their style, it is unique and I would not be able to do it justice. Courage to express yourself through the written word is not easy, but at least it is yours and unread by others, some need to find the courage and lose the greed. Congratulations on your exam work!

Congratulatons for your Finals! And equally for this article. I always love your rants because they usually coincide with my unwritten ones and are amusing to read.

The last few days I had little time, and when opening Triond (like Glynis) I encountered the rehashes in the Hot Content that weren’t even lukewarm anymore – as it turned me off, I turned off the Laptop and read a good book instead.

So, Lauren, you are seconded again on all points. (And thanks for mentioning my scribble)

Lauren, being new to Triond I’ve quickly learned what you summarized as ‘regurgitated material’ is what populates the top ten. (Nothing against those writers – they are really good at what they do and play well to the Triond audience.) I’m one of those writers who start with the blank sheet of paper and try to create first; look for sources later. But, I’m not sure that stuff will ever crack the top ten (fully realizing my articals may not be that appealing) so I’ve been reevalauating my approach to try and crack the top ten. Then I read your rant and am now rethinking whether to change styles to appeal to the masses….I think I’ll try to stay with what feels right for awhile. However, I really enjoy this site and the opportunity to write and be read.

I do not write after I have been reading or watching T.V, it tends to influence peoples work, some people just dont care what they write though and just get mixed into the blender of thoughts.
    Great article.

Congrats on finishing your finals and making the dean’s list! I love your rants – they are much more interesting than a list of the top 10 whatever’s – although the funny signs are always worth a click.
Humour me with a little rant of my own: I would love to see some sort of reward for the writers who do put a great deal of effort into their pieces, proofreading and editing – or at least using their spell check. Now that the online editor also has spell check there should be no excuse for sloppy spelling.

Thanks again for the wonderful comments. I have removed the previous ones that stated my name as Laura. If you can’t get the name right, there’s no sense in it being here.

First: Thank you for mentioning me in your article. I am honored.

Second: The dean’s list is a fine place to be, congratulations!

Third: Do you honestly think in my trolling around behind the scenes here, that I didn’t notice your occasional comment, or the marvelous work that you did on your today.com blog? hehehe

You did a fine job here, this is a great inspirational rant. Thanks for giving everyone a kick in the seat of the pants(myself included)!
