It pays to write on Triond! My portfolio on Triond helped me get one step closer towards my dream of being a professional writer.
Okay, first of all, I must say that I am not writing this article with the mere intention that it is going to garner me many views or whatsoever. I just thought I would like to relate an earnest account on how Triond has in fact helped me move towards my dream – to be a professional writer.
A few weeks ago, I sent a resume over to this local publishing agency company as I was on the lookout for a writer’s job. Although I know that I am still in the midst of pursuing a degree, and probably do not stand much of a chance to get a job as a writer, I still decided to give a shot. I knew very well that most employers on the market are actually looking for fresh grads who at least have a degree in similar fields coupled with professional writing experiences. So I sent my resume over together with a cover letter stating why I would want to get a job there. In fact, I wrote an honest account that I did not have prior experience but that I would like to be given a chance.
I strongly believed that I have to start somewhere, that talent needs good opportunities and a good platform to start with. The thing is, I have been to a previous interview with another publishing company but was turned down due to a lack of experience. I was not even given a chance to be an intern, even though I knew very well that an intern’s pay would be far lesser and that you need to ’slog your ass off’. But I did not mind. At that time, I was rather desperate to try anything once for the sake of pursuing my dream. But when that interview turned out to be sour, I was not deterred.
Triond is actually a very good platform for me to nurture and hone my writing skills. It is a great place to publish and get real reviews from real writers in this closely-knitted community. While I am by no means a prolific writer, I like to treat it as a passion of mine for me to continue posting my poetry and articles. I don’t see it as a good source of passive income yet as I am not earning much here at the moment. To me, passion outweighs the moolah.
And so, back to the topic. After sending out my resume and cover letter, I did not carry high hopes since in my mind I was thinking “Come on, don’t kid yourself. You don’t have any experience. It is the real world, dude!” Days later, to my surprise, I received a call saying that I was shortlisted for an interview! Talking about being Happy with a capital ‘H’. However, I was soon notified that I needed to present them with my portfolio. At that time, I got a bit jitty as I did not have one to start with! I have not been publishing to any magazines or papers. So where do I get all the pretty articles to place them in a neat file as my portfolio?
And then, like an apple that has fallen from the sky out of nowhere(far more amusing than the gravity theory), one word came to my mind – Triond. That’s it! On the day of my interview, I kept in mind of the interview tips that I have learnt. I showed my interviewer my Triond portfolio and told her that I wrote a lot of poetry. To my surprise, she was not very amused. She wanted writers who could write on events, feature articles, etc. LUCKILY (and thanks to my adventurous spirit), I actually wrote a few non-fictional articles. She checked out my article on “Tougher Times Call for a Tougher Self: How to Survive Unemployment” (looking at my state, that was actually a timely article) and said there were actually merits to my writing.
As for now, I am engaged as a freelance writer and have covered an event so far. And I am loving it! Right now, I feel more motivated to venture out more, keep writing, and start publishing my works elsewhere. So you see, I am elated to know that I am one step closer to fulfilling my dream.
I hope this article serves as an inspiration and encouragement to all aspiring writers out there. Even if you are inexperienced, never give up as long as your passion remains true. So, keep writing, and who knows? You might be the next one submitting an article with a similar title as mine!
Now I have a reason to wait for the mails. My first cheque received as a freelance writer!

If you are trying to get a writing job, I don’t think poetry would be the thing to take to an interview. You probably want to stick with your other types of writing for the interview process.
