Sounds Like Life to Me

The poetry of music.

The song, “Sounds Like Life to Me” by Darryl Worley, is an American country music song that speaks volumes to me, especially on days like today.  I have posted the video for this wonderfully encouraging song here.

Vocal Lyrics Are the Poetry of Music

Now, a little backstory here; I woke this morning feeling overwhelmed.  As a heart patient waiting on a transplant, some days are better than others.  I am sure that cancer, HIV/Aids patients and anyone else with a chronic health problem can relate.  Good days are great, the bad days can be extremely tough.

I have been a fan of country music since I was a small boy, and it’s the lyrics that keep me listening.

Before written language, poetry was oral and done to music, so it only makes sense that lyrics should have the power and the imagery that they do. Conjoined with the accompanying instrumentals music can either reinforce an emotional response or create an entirely new one.

That, to me, is the purpose of poetry.

I don’t know if they still teach rhyme and meter in regards to poetry anymore.  A current running question on Triond over the last several days is, when is “poetry’ just words on paper.

I admit to being a fairly staunch supporter of the “old school” in this regard.  Give me a poem with smooth flowing lines, rhythm and a point I don’t have to dig for like an archeologist and I am spellbound.  Modern prose, can and, occasionally does hit the mark; however, often it is simply too abstract, too conveluted to decipher.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again; KISS it.  Keep it simple. Sometimes, as my grandfather used to say, more is just more.
