All writers must go through the school of hard knocks. It comes with the territory. You will grow a thick skin and learn to take criticism with a smile on your face and a thank you on your lips. Anything for the sake of writing. Don’t be discouraged when your articles are rejected. Never give up, when an article is rejected by one magazine sent it to another. As a matter of fact send it to several magazines at the same time. No two magazines are going to accept it anyway.
School of Hard Knocks
If you want to be a writer, first of all get used to the school of hard knocks. You have to grow a thick skin to learn to be a writer. Ask your family or a friend to check out your article and see if it sounds interesting to them.( if you can find anyone with time on their hands. I rarely do.) but it’s still a good idea. Is your article clear and easy to read? Do the photographs help move the article along? How could you change it to make it read better? Listen to all suggestions, then take a deep breath and try following the advice. Get used to the school of hard knocks and criticism. You will receive plenty of it, and be thankful, it’s the way you learn.
People ask me, how do you find subjects to write about? Where do you get your ideas? I keep an idea file. That means when I see an article that looks interesting in various magazines and papers I cut it out and file it in my idea files. I keep files on, beauty, homemaking, decorating, self-help, animals, gardens, and a file for odds and ends, anything unusual or of general interest. Then I look through my files and find something that strikes my fancy. I will write something similar or an article on the same subject and in more depth. There is a never ending list of interesting subjects to write about. Write about the hard knocks you have taken. That subject is always of interest.
Stay in touch with local events. Visit local festivals, craft fairs, sewing events. You might learn how to piece a quilt and write a how-to article. Always take your camera along. You will need pictures to go with your article. You might write an article about how to run a craft show or a fishing contest.
Parents are struggling to communicate with teenagers. Do some research and write an advice article. Remember there are 40 million parents that need an answer. I had hundreds of views on an article I published recently on Triond about How to hire a baby sitter. Parents are looking for advice about parenthood and child behavior. Look around you and see what people are reading and what their interests are. Then get busy and write for them.

I stopped asking friends and family to read anything. They seldom give an honest answer because they don’t want to hurt your feelings.
